Mission Statement
Payne Education Center trains teachers to prevent reading difficulties in children and to remediate dyslexia, while serving as a resource and referral center.
About This Cause
Payne Education Center was founded in 1984 through a generous endowment from Katheryne B. Payne to raise awareness of the reading condition of dyslexia and its challenges, and to improve the diagnosis and reading remediation of Oklahomans with dyslexia. Dyslexia is a neurological condition characterized by difficulties with accurate word recognition as well as poor spelling and decoding abilities. To address the learning needs of children at-risk for reading success and with dyslexia, Payne Education Center provides teachers with systematic, sequential, and explicit instruction in the teaching methods of Multisensory Structured Language reading instruction that are based on the science of reading success. Teachers trained in this method are better equipped to teach children to read. Students taught by Payne trained teachers are empowered to become successful in reading, writing, and spelling. Multisensory Structured Language reading instruction is not only effective with struggling readers, but all students, allowing schools to offer reading instruction that works for all learners. Payne offers teachers research-based, “hands-on” strategies to meet the needs of every student — from low performing to gifted. Quick Facts: Payne has been providing quality, professional training development in reading for teachers for over 32 years. Since 1984, Payne has trained more than 18,000 teachers in Multisensory Structured Language reading instruction methods. Multisensory education incorporates the three learning pathways which are: auditory, kinesthetic, and visual. Payne is the only teacher training center in Oklahoma accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council.
