Mission Statement
Limbs for Life provides prosthetic care to amputees with no other resources to obtain a limb. A unique network of prosthetic clinics across the U.S. allows the organization to serve clients in their local geographic area, further reducing the emotional and financial strain associated with limb loss.
About This Cause
Limbs for Life (LFL) has one program: providing prosthetic care for individuals who cannot otherwise afford it. Approved applicants receive quality prosthetic care from partner clinics near their hometown. LFL pays a pre-set amount of $2,500 for a below knee prosthesis and $3,500 for above knee. In addition LFL recycles and reuses prosthetic components. Used, donated limbs are dismantled and parts are shared locally and internationally. Annually, thousands of prosthetic parts are distributed to aid amputees in 30 to 40 states and 15-20 international locations. Because LFL cannot assist every amputee, staff provides information and referral services to more than 2,000 requests each year. According to the Amputee Coalition of America, 2.1 million individuals are now living with limb loss in the United States. On average, 507 amputations take place per day in the U.S. alone. With the increase in amputations resulting from diabetes and vascular disease, an estimated 3.6 million people will suffer limb loss by 2050. Per the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, 13.7% of U.S. adults were uninsured in the last quarter of 2018. Of that number, 25% earn less than $24,000 annually. The cost for a basic prosthetic leg can range from $10,000 to $30,000. In many states, low income amputees receive prosthetic care through Medicaid. However, some states, including Oklahoma, Texas and Mississippi, do not provide prosthetic coverage for any amputee over the age of 17. For the low-income amputee who has no private pay insurance, no state assistance and is not covered by Medicare, a prosthetic leg may be inaccessible. The goals of the Limbs for Life Foundation are: • To connect amputees in need with access to quality prosthetic care as quickly as possible in order to minimize disruption of their daily lives • To collect and distribute donated supplies and parts to amputees in need Limbs for Life enlists the assistance of hundreds of prosthetic professionals across the U.S. to provide quality care for approved amputees. Amputees are selected through a comprehensive process: • The amputee submits an application to Limbs for Life with required documents to show proof of need • The prosthetic professional evaluates the amputee and submits information with an agreement to provide care • Once approved for financial assistance, the client works directly with the clinic for the fitting and fabrication of the new prosthesis • Upon proof of delivery, Limbs for Life pays a low, preset fee directly to the clinic ($2,500 for below knee; $3,500 for above knee) • There is no charge to the client Limbs for Life encourages the donation of used and new prosthetic equipment by private and commercial sources. • Donated components are available to partnering clinics to keep their out-of-pocket costs low when assisting amputees in need • Excess parts are shared with U.S. based missions to aid amputees internationally Limbs for Life has been providing assistance to amputees in need for 25 years. With only one office, three full-time and two part-time staff, the agency serves thousands of amputees through collaboration with 500+ prosthetic professionals and U.S. based missions. These unique partnerships with service providers enable the amputee to receive quality prosthetic care close to home. Limbs for Life is one of few agencies that recycles and reuses prosthetic components. Used, donated limbs are dismantled and reusable parts are placed into inventory. Prosthetic clinics may request parts for approved clients or for other charitable work. Excess inventory is shared with international partners. Each amputee restored to mobility and independence, to return to work or resume activities with their families and friends is the measure of success and benefit to that individual and the larger community. With appropriate care and assistance, amputees have the opportunity for a productive and independent lifestyle. Clients are interviewed by staff during the application process, upon receipt of the prosthesis and again 3 to 6 months later. In 2019, Limbs for Life was selected to participate in online beta testing for the Listen4Good App, an initiative of the Fund for Shared Insight. Results derived through client-focused feedback loop surveys included: • Limbs for Life clients are more than satisfied with the service provided: Client Survey #1 demonstrated a Net Promoter Score of 100 (Global Benchmark = 66) • More than 50% of clients surveyed agreed with one or more of the following statements: I feel stronger and more capable I feel I am regaining control of my life I can better maintain my independence My feelings of well-being have improved • 46% felt better able to care for their family Beginning in 2021, Limbs for Life anticipates funding more than $1 million in new prosthetic limbs for amputees across the country; continued satisfaction expressed by our clients; and the development of new international partnerships.
