About This Cause
First Tee is a national youth development program with a focus on building character attributes and promoting health through the game of golf. ( recreation). The First Tee program was established in 1997 by the PGA, LPGA, etc. to impact young people and grow the game of golf, a lifelong sport. Our chapter was established in 2003, a 5,000 square foot learning center, 3 holes, driving range, and short game area was opened in 2011. Youth Development specialists assisted First Tee in developing a curriculum with an impact focus. Studies have confirmed that the curricula are impactful. Students perform better in school, higher graduation rates, build confidence, socially competent, and better manage their emotions. We are engaged and focused on the physical, emotional and social health of the student at all ages. The basis for the curricula to experimental learning, a seamless approach, and transferability of the skills/attributes from First Tee classes to their everyday life, home, school, family, church, etc. The First Tee of Metropolitan Oklahoma delivers this program with an established set of curricula, trained and certified volunteer coaches who come from every walk of life and profession ( strong mentors for the students) , a contracted PGA professional at 7 metro sites. Programs include the Life Skill, the foundation of the program, a 7-week course taught in the spring, summer, and fall. Length of program is dependent on the age of the child. Classes for the 7--17-year-olds vary from 1 hour for the 7–9-year-old, to 2 hours for the 13 + age group. Programming is delivered in Oklahoma City, Midwest City, Noman, El Reno, and Edmond, programming is based on affiliate agreements with local courses without a fee to First Tee but with limited hours, , The curricula is adaptable to every academic area of a student’s educational program, science, English, math, etc. Fees are $ 25 per session and 40% are on scholarship. Our second program is an outreach program delivered to such groups as YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, Indian Clinic, Police Athletic League, etc. This programming is typically a 4–6-week program for an hour on the green course. It is a touch to stimulate interest in the game and character building. In the summer,4 day camps are offered at our First Tee facility, over 300 students participated in the 2023 camps; Oklahoma City Police officers assist with this instruction each year. The third program is the Community School Program delivered in the physical education teachers who are fully certified through the regular classes during the school day. There is a defined curricula and SNAG equipment is used to immolate the practical application of the game. The Metro OKC area includes 24 independent schools district, Oklahoma City Public Schools is the largest with 33 elementary schools. Adoption of this program will be accomplished over the next 3-year period. An outreach coordinator will be responsible for this implementation. The plan is to have this program in every elementary school in the metro area in 5 years. Special programs are provided to our students, The Evans Caddie program at Oklahoma City Golf and country club, a Girls program taught each month (character, golf skills, and social activities) , student tournament series conducted each Sunday during the program session, Inter Club Tournament series with various clubs in the metro area, and assistant coaching opportunities for students over 15. Our students also participate in the First Tee National Opportunities; Pebble Beach Senior Tour event, Leadership academies, and National Academy. The goals for our chapter are based on progression and retention. The strategic plan is, 1) to establish the community school in all metro elementary schools ( 24 school districts), 2) to encourage the participation of students in the Life Skills 7 week courses, 3) build interest in competitive play to initiate middle school golf teams in every school district, and 4) very competitive golf teams on the high school level. The focus will remain on building and generating a community of very capable, and character based young adults. All program costs are privately generated with limited registration fees and several chapter fees from the National office. We host an annual golf tournament to secure about 35% of our budget. Direct and in kind are foundational to our fundraising plan.
