Mission Statement
Our mission is to enrich children's lives through the wonderful world of music (ranging from classical to Broadway) and to contribute toward the cultural diversity and vibrancy of the S.F. Bay Area arts scene. To accomplish this we do not use auditions as a gate keeper; our only "password" is the desire of a youngster to play and grow with the Orchestra. About SYO Sunset Youth Orchestra has been established in 1999. It’s a nonprofit organization! There are about 60-66 children ages from 8-17. They performed at many places like schools, senior homes, SF youth festivals, international festivals in LA and in New York at Carnegie Hall 2016. 10 teachers, conductors and guests performers are involved in children education. There are full orchestra instruments players: strings, woodwinds, brass, percussions, piano. Hundreds students graduated this orchestra and continued their musical journey in their lives. Children from SF, Bay Aria, Pacifica, Millbrae, San Mateo, South SF, Belmont, Walnut Creek and more cities participated in our program. The music they love was classical, popular, jazz. Professional teachers help them during orchestra rehearsals and individually! Singers soloists, instrumentalist soloists and chorus participated during the performances! Establish new students groups: advertising; hire and pay to 10 music teachers; rent facilities for the rehearsals; buy insurance for children and faculties safety; buy musical instruments for children who are in need; order musical arrangements for new established group of children for specific instruments they will play; purchase copy machine to creat many orchestra parts, usually 300 pages practicing copies only for one song. There are about 25-30 songs they learn per year; give financial support to children of families where pandemic effected dramatically; provide food for students during rehearsal; organize carpools for student who live outside SF and inside SF where parents cannot give them a ride being at work. Music director of Sunset Youth Irchestra. Ms. Ganenko received her Masters degree in Music from the Conservatory of St. Petersburg, and studied with Victor Lieberman, the “concert master” of the Leningrad Symphony. In addition to playing the violin for the San Francisco Sinfonietta, Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, and teaching at San Francisco’s French American International School, Ganenko was urged by parents of her private students to form an orchestra that would challenge their children and provide an opportunity for youth whose schools lacked a music program. Since its founding, SYO has annually provided approximately 45 children and youth between the ages of seven and 17 with sustained training and performance experience in an orchestral setting in a cost-effective manner for families of San Francisco. SYO Program Description and Continued Program Needм The Sunset Youth Orchestra was created on the premise that playing music, and playing music in ensembles stimulates healthy development in children and youth. The SYO teaches students how to work with other individuals, develops their ability to concentrate, instills discipline and self-direction, and provides a lifetime of cultural enrichment. SYO’s programs continue to be implemented in coordination with a student’s regular academic school year. The schedule also follows a typical orchestral season. A year’s participation in the Orchestra begins with an audition in June, and commencement of rehearsals in October and ending in May of the following year with concerts occurring in December and May. SYO students are provided a total of 58 hours of training and experience. Students between 8 and 17 may audition to play any of the orchestral instruments: primarily violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone and percussion (though other instruments are welcome) at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced level. SYO provides families and students with opportunities and expert assistance to rent instruments and or purchase an instrument that is right for their child. Part of the Orchestra’s unique approach is that no child should be turned away who desires to play an instrument. SYO does not recruit only the most talented performers through competitive auditions; instead, every interested child is encouraged to study music and develop proficiency on their particular instrument of choice. An integral part of the SYO approach is the provision of customized scores that are created for the individual student’s level and instrument. This helps build confidence and encourages students to achieve their highest potential in an atmosphere of ease and enjoyment. Each young musician is given an opportunity to play a variety of pieces throughout the school year. During this time Students will: Develop listening and rehearsal skills, Improve intonation, rhythm, phrasing!
