Mission Statement
Beacon Academy closes the opportunity gap for a cadre of Boston’s bright and determined students. Through education and social advocacy, we help our students create life-changing opportunities as they build lives of integrity, economic independence, and impact.
About This Cause
Beacon Academy offers a 10-year program that prepares students from historically underrepresented and/or economically constrained backgrounds to succeed in competitive high schools, colleges, and careers. Each year, a class of 16-24 students starts their Academy Year (14 months) in the summer after 8th grade (occasionally 7th) at our campus in Boston. They benefit from a supportive, academic environment with a 6:1 student to teacher ratio. They receive guidance with high school applications and secure placements aligned with their academic, personal, and financial needs. Students then become a part of our alumni program for an additional nine years. During high school we encourage participation in extracurricular activities, campus life, and leadership opportunities. We also check in regarding mental health and wellbeing. We collaborate with high school faculty to provide guidance through college applications, interviews, tours, and decisions. During college, we provide dorm room essentials, transportation arrangements, and guidance around course selection and study abroad options. We help alumni to access internship/job opportunities, connect with professionals, and prepare for careers. We engage alumni with a monthly newsletter announcing events, action items, and important information. In the 10th year of programming, we provide career development workshops, one-on-one mentorship, and professional networking events. From resume and cover letter writing to personalized career guidance, this program ensures the long-term success of our alumni. Beacon Academy partnered with Project Evident in 2023 to document a theory of change and key performance indicators: Academy Year 16-24 students are enrolled at Beacon Academy. At least 95% of students who enroll successfully complete the Academy Year. At least 95% of students who enroll and successfully complete the Academy Year are admitted into a “good fit” independent high school with a financial aid package that provides at least up to the expected family contribution (EFC). High School Years At least 95% of students who enroll successfully complete High School. At least 95% of students who complete High School secure post-secondary admissions (4-year college) with a financial aid package that provides at least up to EFC. Post-Secondary and Beyond At least 90% of Beacon alumni graduate from a post-secondary institution. 100% of Beacon alumni engaged in the Beacon Academy’s programs and services, secured jobs, or attended graduate school. We are happy to report that all students from the Beacon Academy Class of 2024 graduated and received at least one offer of admission with financial aid to an independent high school and are starting their first year of high school. 100% of Beacon Academy Class of 2020 alumni received multiple offers from 53 different colleges. 19 of these 20 alumni are starting their freshman year of college, and one student moved back to their home country to be with family. Beacon Academy is tuition-free for qualifying families/caregivers. We raise 100% of our annual operating funds through individuals, corporations, and foundations. We receive 0% government funding.
