Mission Statement

The Sexual Assault Resource Center's (SARC) mission is to support survivors of sexual violence through advocacy, crisis intervention, and counseling and work to end sexual violence in the Brazos Valley.

About This Cause

In 1981, members of the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office began to discuss the need for services for survivors of sexual assault. From these conversations, three individuals, Justice of the Peace Carolyn Hensarling, District Attorney Travis B. Bryan, III, and Assistant District Attorney Carolyn Ruffino, founded the Brazos County Rape Crisis Center, Inc., a non-profit, private corporation. In 1982, the organization began to train volunteers and officially opened the doors for services in October of 1983. Since that time, the Center has trained 1,000s of volunteers, established strong community partnerships, conducted training and educational workshops, and assisted thousands of survivors with crisis intervention services. In 2008, the organization rebranded to the Sexual Assault Resource Center or SARC and began serving the entire Brazos Valley region including Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson, and Washington Counties. SARC continues to expand its services and access for survivors of sexual violence and works to end sexual violence in our seven-county region through our education and prevention work.
