Mission Statement
The Institute for Spirituality and Health exists to enhance well-being of all people by exploring the relationship between spirituality and health through the lens of an interfaith board of trustees with representation of all major faith traditions, as a meeting ground for all people to find meaning in health and healing.
About This Cause
The Institute for Spirituality and Health is dedicated to the concept that all humans are spiritual beings and research affirms that spirituality plays a vital role in an individuals’ health and in healing. Since 1955, the Institute has been serving the community in unique ways, and has expanded its outstanding Board of Trustees and Adjunct Faculty with representation from the major faith traditions. We educate physicians, nurses, and others in healthcare to consider the culture and spiritual nature of the patient, and to consider the whole person with which they are engaging. Direct services to the community include free grief and bereavement support groups, meditation sessions, mind-body awareness programs, religious programs, and innovative collaboration nationwide and internationally. Public health initiatives include our FaithHealth network, the Faith & Diabetes support network, the Greater Houston Healing Collaborative, and many, many more collaborative and innovative projects. Our Nursing Conference and Psychotherapy and Faith Conference have been serving nurses, therapists, clinicians, and clergy for over 30 years. The Institute also co-sponsors the national Conference on Medicine and Religion in concert with leading educational institutions for more than 10 years. Spirituality involves our innate ability to connect – to connect to others, to our environment, to the transcendent mystery, and to our true, deepest self. What is the relationship between health and spirituality? Since 1955, as a founding member of the Texas Medical Center, the Institute for Spirituality and Health has shone light on this question by way of innovative education, research, and direct service programs.
