Mission Statement
Empowering our community to live healthy lives; by providing, prevention, intervention, and recovery support services for children and adults.
About This Cause
In 1957, the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Awareness was founded by a group of prominent citizens to support adults struggling with the disease of alcoholism. Soon after, programs were added to include those struggling with the disease of addiction of alcohol and drug use. Youth prevention programs were added in 1987 when statistics at that time showed that one in every four children in any classroom had the disease of addiction in their family. Studies showed that children of those struggling with a substance use disorder, although at increased risk for developing the disease themselves, could be empowered to understand addiction as a disease that is preventable, and that they are not responsible for the behaviors of others. Seventy-five percent of our work is with evidence-based substance use prevention curriculum taught in schools and geared for elementary, middle, and high school students in public, private, and charter schools in Bexar and surrounding counties. Youth Prevention Universal (YPU) are programs that reach the general population. Youth Prevention Selective (YPS) program targets groups at-risk in elementary, middle, and high school. These are children recommended by teachers and counselors because of their home environment. The Youth Prevention Indicated (YPI) program is designed for children, typically in middle and high school, who exhibit risk related behaviors, coming to school intoxicated or on drugs, disciplinary problems, and/or other risk factors, including their home environment. Youth Prevention services are at no charge. Our Recovery Support Services make up 25% of the work we do. We have trained Recovery Coaches who collaborate with people coming out of rehab programs and help them walk their path to recovery. Our coaches help find housing, if needed, employment, get food and supplies, make sure they make their court obligations, and someone to help them through their emotional, mental, and physical road to recovery. All our Recovery Coaches are in long-term recovery and can speak openly about what this group is going through. Recovery Support services are at no charge to clients. Other services include: • Circles of San Antonio Community Coalitions in Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, and Kendall counties. Each of the four coalitions promote a drug-free community by mobilizing diverse partnerships; developing, implementing, and supporting community level change; and, increase public awareness of the harmful effects of alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and non-medical use of prescription drugs. • Prevention Resource Center – A data hub and prevention training liaison for Region 8. The PRC produces an annual Regional Needs Assessment to serve as a community reference tool with region specific substance use and related information. • Presentation and trainings for professionals, youth, clergy, and teachers on drug and alcohol trends and other related topics. There is no charge for presentations and trainings. • Assessment and Referrals – Screening for adults that provides a full drug and alcohol assessment for both in and out of state requests.
