Mission Statement

The Volunteer Services Council (VSC) is dedicated to enhancing the qulity of life of patients at the Austin State Hospital (ASH). The VSC's work started in 1952 when a handful of volunteers wanted to show love and compassion. Through the last 65 years. the VSC has made a tremendous difference in our community and the lives of thousands of Texans who come to ASH each year for hope and healing.

About This Cause

Through the support of individual donors, corporate partnerships and sponsorships, and event participants, the VSC uses raised funds to enrich the lives of children and adults who are having mental health challenges. Programs and services include but aren't limited to: **Experience It helps patients integrate back in the community by providing off campus experiences including theatre, sports, dance, and music performances; **Insights Art program provides patient an opportunity to engage in self discovery, personal growth and healing through creativity; **Pet Pard'ners encourages dog owners to join our team with their fourlegged pals to visit patients throughout the hospital; **Family House located on the ASH campus provides lodging for family members; **Peer Support links current patients with individuals who have mastered recovery from a mental illness and to other support groups in the community; **The VSC offers assistance with birth certificates, social security cards, and identification cards; **ASH's active and successful volunteer program are an essential component of the success with volunteers and patient interaction; and Capital improvements and equipment not currently in the state of Texas' budget for the hospital including exercise equipment, gazebos, and sports courts.
