Mission Statement
To provide sheet metal contractors with a highly skilled, highly productive workforce enabling them to be more competitive in the marketplace while assisting apprentices and journeymen in their endeavor to expand their knowledge and skills so that they are able to continually improve their own employment opportunities.
About This Cause
The Sheet Metal Workers' Local 67 Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) and Trust Fund provides workers with a highly skilled education at no cost to the student. A non-profit education organization with training centers in both San Antonio and Austin Texas, oversees a Department of Labor-registered Apprenticeship Program which provides entry-level candidates on-the-job training starting at $16 an hour average wage, increases in wages as job skills are mastered, a full benefits package, a total of 800 hours of classroom/shop education and 7200 hours of on-the-job training at no cost to the student/apprentice, and a variety of industry certificates. The program lasts four years and trains apprentices in any one of four career pathways: HVAC, Welding, Air Balance, and Building Information Modeling (construction-related software systems). Each apprenticeship program completer becomes a Bonafide journeyperson and continues their employment at full-scale wages in the growing South & Central Texas region receiving continued no-cost worker upgrade training throughout their career as a sheet metal worker. The program is well-supported by nearly 30 different sheet metal contractors who contribute over 80% of funding to the JATC Trust to cover most operating expenses and staff salaries for both training centers. These contractors employ apprentices and direct large-scale construction projects such as the Tesla Gigafactory, Samsung plant, and the University of Texas’ (UT) Moody Event Center in Austin as well as a UT Health Science Center and an up-and-coming Methodist and University Hospital in San Antonio.
