Mission Statement
In pursuit of educational equity, Open Door Preschools nurtures and inspires young children of diverse abilities, circumstances, and backgrounds in a child-led, play-based environment.
About This Cause
In 1975, a family wanted to send their two children to preschool together. Because their son had a disability, no one would accept them both. So they started their own school so that children with special needs and typically developing children could learn, grow, and thrive together. Since then… * We expanded our mission to emphasize socioeconomic and cultural diversity of our families. * We added infants and young toddlers to our mix. * We have built a strong reputation in the community based on our commitment to high quality early childhood education for all children and our attention to social and emotional development. * We have worked with many children who have been unsuccessful at other programs. * We have been awarded NAEYC accreditation (we were the first in Austin), which is the gold standard in the field. * We have established a social work program to help connect families to community resources and to bridge school and home. * We have provided a myriad of training opportunities for students in the field so we can broaden our reach. * We were one of the few Austin-area preschools to re-open during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, initially serving children in families of essential worker. Over the course of the pandemic, two of our three pre-pandemic locations re-opened and a class for 5-7 year-olds was temporarily added. The older-child class was discontinued when schools re-opened, and we are returning to pre-COVID enrollment levels for our usual classes. Our goal is for all of our children and families to live happily ever after. We currently (2021) have two locations (east Austin) and will be opening a new location (north Austin) in mid-2022. Prior to the pandemic, we served over 210 children every day across three schools (two in east Austin, one in Clarkesville), and we anticipate that we will once again serve over 200 children every day.
