About This Cause
Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio builds affordable houses in partnership with families in need. We work with very low-income families whose total income is generally 20% - 70% of the area median income. For most of our families that means an annual income of approximately $28,000 per household. We are not a charity or handout program, but rather we help families help themselves. Built with volunteer labor, Habitat homes are sold to low-income families at zero percent interest and no profit. Families are accepted to the Habitat program based on their need, their ability to pay a zero percent interest mortgage, and their willingness to partner. Applicants must be residents of Bexar County. As a program requirement, families invest a minimum of 300 "sweat equity" hours to help build their own house and that of their neighbors. They also attend home ownership readiness training, covering a variety of topics from home maintenance and repair to money management. Mortgage payments for a three- or four-bedroom Habitat home average just $500 per month.
