Mission Statement
Chrysalis Ministries mission is "to facilitate the personal, emotional and spiritual transformation of incarcerated individuals, those formerly incarcerated and their families".
About This Cause
Chrysalis Ministries staff and volunteers facilitate interfaith chaplaincy services and life skills classes in ten detention and treatment facilities in Bexar and Karnes counties to 40,000 incarcerated individuals annually. At our outreach center, the Family Renewal Center, 18 social service programs are provided to nearly 2,200 formerly incarcerated individuals and 1,500 of their family members as these individuals struggle to rebuild their lives following release from incarceration. For the past eight years the rate of recidivism for the formerly incarcerated has been less than 15%. This past year the rate of recidivism was only 11%! It is estimated that 60,000 - 70,000 individuals are released from the county jail and state and federal prison into Bexar County each year. These individuals have an extremely difficult time reentering society, despite the fact that they have "served their time" and despite their best efforts to make a successful reentry. The life skills classes our staff and volunteers facilitate in the detention facilities offer incarcerated individuals new ways of approaching challenging situations and instruction in how to handle life's inevitable difficulties. These incarcerated individuals begin to learn better decision making skills. Upon their release they continue with classes, support groups and/or case management services offered at our Family Renewal Center. Individuals who find sustainable employment, appropriate housing and have ongoing support post release are significantly more likely to become productive, law-abiding citizens and better role models for their children.
