Mission Statement
The CCDC has three key missions: 1. Preserve the history of Clarksville. The CCDC maintains the historic Haskell House as a museum to Clarksville; fights the demolition of houses that contribute to the Clarksville National Register Historic District; works with property owners to help them identify appropriate ways to remodel or enlarge their historically contributing homes; sponsors events to educate neighborhood residents about the history of Clarksville; and responds to media questions about that history. 2. Build and maintain a strong sense of community in the neighborhood. The CCDC achieves this mission mainly by organizing neighborhood events. The events bring residents together and also provide opportunities for residents to become more involved with their neighborhood through volunteerism. 3. Maintain the diversity of Clarksville through our affordable housing program. The CCDC’s homes and duplexes are scattered throughout the neighborhood and provide 16 families with housing. In 2020, the Austin chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded the CCDC a Community Vision Award for the organization’s affordable housing program. For more information about this program, go to the Affordable Housing page on this site.
About This Cause
For 44 years, the CCDC has been working to preserve Clarksville’s history, to maintain the neighborhood’s traditional sense of community through a variety of events, and to keep Clarksville ethnically and economically diverse through its affordable housing program. The CCDC is run by a 9-member volunteer board of directors elected by current and former residents of Clarksville who are members of the organization. The board meets at 6:30 PM on the 3rd Tuesday of every month (except December) at the historic Haskell House, 1703 Waterston Avenue. All meetings are open to the public. Note: During the Covid pandemic, board meetings are being held online. To attend, contact Kim O’Brien, kkronzer@aol.com. In 2018, Austin Mayor Steve Adler declared October of that year Clarksville Community Development Corporation Month in recognition of the organization’s many accomplishments during its history and of the dedication and hard work of the CCDC’s many neighborhood volunteers. And in 2020, the Austin chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded the CCDC a Community Vision Award for its affordable housing program.
