Mission Statement

Greater Houston Preservation Alliance, Inc. dba Preservation Houston promotes the preservation and appreciation of Houston's architectural and cultural historic resources through education, advocacy and committed action.

About This Cause

Since 1978, Preservation Houston has advocated for the preservation and appreciation of Houston's irreplaceable architectural and cultural historic resources. Preservation Houston is the only nonprofit organization in Harris County providing preservation services to the public free of charge. The work includes assisting the owners of historic homes and buildings with city landmark nominations and neighborhood associations interested in creating city historic districts. PH also provides information on the process to qualify for state and federal preservation incentives, and facilitates communication between property owners and the appropriate city, state and federal agencies and officials. Preservation Houston does not benefit financially from these efforts. Preservation Houston's public programs support its mission by educating Houstonians about the city's surviving historic architecture and the benefits of historic preservation. PH's Architecture Walks provide monthly guided tours of significant historic neighborhoods. The History in Print author series and Preservation in Practice speaker series provide new perspectives on Houston's heritage and exceptional preservation projects. PH is probably best know for the Good Brick Awards. Since 1979, the awards have recognized outstanding historic preservation projects and the people who make them happen. The Good Brick Tour provides the public with the opportunity to step inside award-winning restored homes and buildings.
