About This Cause

Founded in 1979, CASI is a non-profit, no-kill organization caring for more than 400 needy pets. Serving surrounding counties to include, but not limited to: Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Bandera, Kendall, and Hayes. Our primary services include providing a safe haven for pets that have been abandoned, abused, or surrendered by the public; educating citizens on responsible pet ownership and the need for spay and neuter programs. We've sheltered thousands of pets, found homes for most; educated schools/youth; mentored community service workers; partnered with PetSmart, adding to their 5,000,000 in-store adoptions since 1994; partnered with PETCO to place adoptable felines in their stores; built a donor base of 1,000 and partnered with animal behavioral organizations to modify pet behavior to facilitate pet adoptions. All these efforts contributed to improving public safety and health. In 2017. CASI took in 357 needy pets, reducing the number of stray pets on the streets and potentially preventing unnecessary dog fights and confrontations with humans. We ensure all of our pets are spayed or neutered, so no CASI pet would ever contribute to the pet overpopulation in San Antonio or the surrounding area. We sterilized 129 pets in 2017, preventing over790 unwanted offspring. (Per ASPCA web site feature "Pet Statistics", each fertile pet would potentially contribute at least one litter of 4-5 per year.) Both of these measures have a direct impact on the improved safety of our neighborhoods. Safer neighborhoods encourage residents to engage in more outdoor, physical activities, thus improving their health. Researchers believe owning a pet helps people live longer by encouraging exercise and reducing stress. CASI provides both direct and indirect benefits that improve the mental and physical conditions of older citizens and enhance the concept of responsibility for children and young people by caring for an animal.
