About This Cause

Founded in 1979, Tu Casa, Inc. started with a handful of individuals who recognized the need to protect those who experienced domestic violence by providing anyone who needed to flee a safe place to stay. The small alliance of community members offered their own homes to shelter women and their children who were fleeing from abusive spouses. As the years went by, Tu Casa, Inc. established itself as a unique and valued resource. In 2013 Tu Casa, Inc. added the nationally accredited Children’s Advocacy Center of the San Luis Valley (SLV CAC) to its brand. Based in the charming town of Alamosa, Colorado, Tu Casa, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides free, confidential, and trauma informed services to those who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and child sexual abuse. Tu Casa, Inc. empowers people to live healthy, violence free lives. Tu Casa, Inc. serves all six counties (Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Rio Grande, Mineral, and Saguache) within the San Luis Valley. The organization is a respected and active member of the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Abuse, Violence Free Colorado, the Colorado Children’s Alliance, and the National Children’s Alliance. Tu Casa, Inc. works with agencies across the San Luis Valley to outreach the most vulnerable and marginalized populations. The organization has formalized its partnership with 16 law enforcement agencies, 5 Department of Human Services, the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the San Luis Valley Behavioral Health Group, and the Immigrant Resource Center through a Memorandum of Understanding. With these formal partnerships, Tu Casa, Inc. has broken down existing barriers that have historically kept clients from healing and moving forward. Tu Casa, Inc. is the only organization of its kind to exist in the greater San Luis Valley area. Advocates provide bilingual 24-hour crisis assistance, supportive services, court accompaniment, financial assistance (rental, gas, utility, and more), prevention education, and emergency shelter. Other specialized services include sexual assault nurse examinations and forensic interviewing. Staying true to its roots, Tu Casa, Inc. has a small staff and uses a shared leadership model. Each staff member is entrusted to use their own unique skill set to create trauma informed practices to best serve clients. Specialized non-cookie cutter practices ensure that clients are given careful and attentive services to best fit their unique needs. Tu Casa, Inc. is grant funded, but needs donations from the community, businesses, and foundations to ensure that our 40 year legacy can continue on to lift people out of hopeless situations so that they can be free to choose how they live their life.
