About This Cause

NAMI San Antonio services are unique. There is no other organization that provides free mental health education in our community, in a supportive manner at locations throughout our community. We provide our students with the tools and resources necessary to navigate through the mental health service network. NAMI San Antonio equips them to independently advocate for quality care by creating a greater awareness of issues that specifically affect those with mental illness and their family members. Our education classes empower family members/care-givers to create positive change in quality service delivery. Our classes provided in the community are: Family-to-Family education is a free 12 week course for family and loved ones of adults diagnosed with mental illness; Peer to Peer education is a free 8 week course for individuals diagnosed with mental illness who are interested in establishing and maintaining a recovery-oriented lifestyle; and NAMI Basics education is a free 6 week course for parents and other primary caregivers of children under the age of 24. NAMI Connections is a free weekly support group for individuals diagnosed with mental illness. NAMI San Antonio also offers community presentations such as: NAMI In Our Own Voice (IOOV) for law enforcement, mental health providers, churches, community groups and schools; Smarts Advocacy training; and Ending the Silence for middle/high school students, their parents and school staff. NAMI programs facilitate individual and family engagement in recovery, which directly reduces costly health care and contributes to better clinical treatment compliance. Once educated, individuals have the resources to actively participate in their treatment and utilize support to maintain wellness and avoid costly emergency room or EMS services when in crisis.
