Mission Statement

The American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand was founded by the Council of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in 1986. The Hand Foundation was created to provide funding to support educational services, to stimulate research, and to increase the outreach efforts of the Society. The AFSH funds research grants and awards, educational scholarships and travel fellowships, and supports outreach mission work through the Touching Hands Project which provides free surgery to under-served communities in the U.S. and abroad.

About This Cause

The MISSION of the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand is to advance the care of hand and upper extremity disorders by supporting research, education, and outreach through the efficient collection of donations and administration of grants. Our VISION is to be recognized as the world’s premier source of financial support for upper extremity research, education and outreach. The Hand Foundation's CORE VALUES recognize integrity as our most important asset. We will adhere to the highest ethical principles while seeking new and innovative ways to raise capital for hand and upper extremity research, education and outreach. In conjunction with the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, we will administer resources responsibly and distribute funds with the utmost efficiency, resourcefulness and impartiality. We are proud to support the hand surgery community by providing research grants and awards, scholarships, travel fellowships, and support medical outreach missions both in the U.S. and abroad through the Touching Hands Project.
