Mission Statement
The Austin Film Society (AFS) began in 1985 with a group of friends getting together to watch films that weren't distributed to the general public. As word got out, that small group of cinephiles turned to hundreds and the Austin Film Society was born, honoring classic and independent film with screenings in venues all over Austin. Over time, our mission has evolved from simply appreciating films to supporting the filmmakers who create them. Support AFS today and help us make Austin synonymous with great film!
About This Cause
The Austin Film Society is a hub for diverse filmmakers and cinephiles to teach, support and inspire one another. Its spaces foster collaboration, ideas and high caliber projects. Its programs invite all who value cinema to participate, grow and prosper on the world stage, beginning with Austin. Incorporated as a nonprofit educational organization in 1986, the Austin Film Society is now a flourishing institution with three facilities and over 1800 members. AFS Cinema: AFS currently curates over 200 films annually, but recently signed a lease in order to launch a full-time art house theater. In the coming months, the new AFS Cinema will grow to include two screens, allowing for the most monumental expansion of the exhibition program in the history of AFS. AFS’s programming aims to educate audiences, expose them to new works, and nurture our community’s passion for cinema. Austin Public / Artist Services: We formalized our Community Media initiative by taking on the management of Austin's public access television station, which created an opportunity to significantly expand our adult education program. All of this has allowed AFS to offer more services to our community including industry workshops, affordable digital literacy classes, works-in-progress screenings, fiscal sponsorship for independent filmmakers, and the AFS Grant, which has distributed 1.7 million in cash and $332,730 in goods and services to promising local filmmakers since 1996. Austin Studios: Over time, our mission has evolved from simply appreciating films to supporting the filmmakers who create them. Part of that initiative led to the founding of Austin Studios in 2000; a working production facility with more than 100,000 sq. ft. of rentable space.
