Mission Statement
Las Americas’ vision is that of a country where all immigrants have access to high quality legal representation based on the principle of justice and human rights. Las Americas’ mission is to see this vision realized by providing high quality legal representation to immigrants and by advocating for human rights.
About This Cause
We are a binational non-profit organization that provides legal services and advocacy to the most vulnerable. Through our work, we aim to transform the systems and power structures impacting immigrant and asylum seekers' lives. We act as wayfinders accompanying the most vulnerable on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border. Since its founding in 1987, Las Americas has served over 50,000 persons, with a strong focus on women, children, families, the LGBTQIA+ community, and asylum seekers. With a staff of 23 located in El Paso, Texas, New Mexico, and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, we: - Serve immigrant families and individuals seeking immigration relief and pathways, including family reunification, work permit authorization, DACA, benefits for immigrant survivors of crimes in the US, citizenship, and more. - Help immigrants in ICE detention centers navigate changing federal asylum rules and fight their removal from this country while also asserting their rights in custody. Provide critical know-your-rights presentations, educate about policy and practice using CBP One, and aid the most vulnerable—like those harmed in the March 2023 INM detention fire. - Offer internships, service weeks, and other volunteer and fellowship opportunities to help train future advocates and educate them on the dynamic history and culture of borderland regions. - Challenge racist and lawless anti-immigrant policies in court.
