Mission Statement
The mission of Scotty's House Brazos Valley Child Advocacy Center (Scotty's House) is to provide safety, healing, and justice for children victimized by abuse through professional assessment, counseling, and education in a compassionate and collaborative approach.
About This Cause
For 30 years, Scotty’s House has been a place of safety, healing, and hope for child-victims of crime in the Brazos Valley. As the region’s only accredited Child Advocacy Center (CAC), we provide compassionate, coordinated care for children and their non-offending family members throughout every stage of the investigative and healing process—from the first report to recovery. Scotty’s House was founded in 1995 in loving memory of four-year-old Scotty, the son of a local pediatrician. In 1982, Scotty was abducted from his daycare center in Bryan, Texas and tragically killed by his father seven months later, just as federal agents moved in to rescue him. In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, the Brazos Valley community united to ensure that no child would ever face abuse alone again. Since that time, our work has remained rooted in compassion, collaboration, and community responsibility. What began as a response to one child’s tragic story has grown into a vital resource serving more than 14,000 children across our seven-county region. In 1995, we served just 58 children. In 2024, we served 1,022 children with trauma-informed services, delivered at no cost to their families. These services included: • 642 forensic interviews in our safe, child-friendly environment • 648 families receiving advocacy and support services • 150 medical evaluations • 3,398 counseling sessions Every number represents a child who was heard, believed, and supported on their journey to healing. Scotty’s House remains the only organization in the Brazos Valley providing this full continuum of care under one roof. For many children, the most important and most courageous moment of their lives happens within the walls of Scotty’s House. We honor that trust with every step we take—and we’re committed to walking beside them, and their families, as they reclaim the joy of childhood. Our team of skilled, compassionate professionals delivers vital services to ensure each child’s journey, from investigation to healing, is as seamless and supportive as possible. Using the nationally recognized Child Advocacy Center (CAC) model, we provide a collaborative, child-focused approach that reduces the trauma children experience and centers their safety and emotional well-being. When a report of abuse is made to law enforcement or CPS, our team steps in with services designed to give children a voice, provide peace of mind, and offer hope for healing. 1) Forensic Interviews: Giving Children a Voice Our forensic interviewers are specially trained to speak with children of different ages and at developmental levels in a way that is neutral, non-leading, and trauma informed. These interviews take place in a warm, child-friendly space designed to help kids feel safe and supported as they share their experiences. Interviews are observed in real-time by our multidisciplinary partners, including law enforcement and CPS, reducing the number of times a child must recount their trauma and ensuring critical information is collected in a single, coordinated effort. This process not only protects the child emotionally but also strengthens investigations and legal outcomes. 2) Forensic Medical Exams: Providing Peace of Mind Our medical team offers timely, expert care in a setting designed to ease fear and discomfort. Medical professionals conduct exams related to sexual and physical abuse with compassion, sensitivity, and a focus on the child’s dignity. These are conducted on-site in our medical suite or at local hospitals. Beyond providing critical documentation for investigations, these exams offer reassurance to children and families, helping them better understand the child’s health and begin the process of healing with confidence. 3) Counseling Services: Focusing on Healing We believe every child deserves the chance to heal and rediscover joy. Our counseling services are designed to meet each child and family where they are, using evidence-based approaches that address trauma’s emotional and behavioral effects. Each service helps children process their experiences in a safe environment, while also equipping families with tools to support their child’s recovery long after they leave our care. 4) Family Advocacy: Offering Resources and Care Our family advocates are trusted guides throughout the entire process. They help non-offending caregivers understand their rights, navigate the criminal justice system, and access community resources like housing, food assistance, and medical support. They also provide emotional support, recognizing that healing involves the whole family. By walking beside caregivers and connecting them to resources, our advocates help ensure that children grow up surrounded by stability, safety, and care.
