Mission Statement
Communities In Schools of South Central Texas surrounds students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. We believe that EVERY CHILD needs and deserves: A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult. A safe place to learn and grow. A healthy start and a healthy future. A marketable skill to use upon graduation. A chance to give back to peers and the community.
About This Cause
Communities In Schools South Central Texas began over 27 years ago by the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce to help students (grades K-12) achieve in schools, graduate, and be successful throughout their lives. For the majority of those years Chris Douglas has served as the CEO and has grown the organization tremendously. CIS remains the only campus-based nonprofit program for the most vulnerable students in the school districts we serve. Today our program has grown to 75 staff providing services to over 32,000 students across 50 schools in 7 school districts (New Braunfels, Marion, Comal, Nixon-Smiley, Luling, Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City, and Seguin) with over 4,000 students receiving intensive and ongoing-case managed services. Case-managed students receive targeted services such as supportive guidance/counseling, mental health intervention, health/human services (basic life needs such as shelter, food, and clothing), tutoring, and college preparation assistance. The administrative office is located in the historical Hinman House in downtown New Braunfels. Every student who needs help receives help. Professional site coordinators are in our schools all day everyday-where kids spend most of their time. Children would not receive critical services if it weren’t for CIS and the unwavering support of over 300 local businesses, social service agencies, churches and hundreds of volunteers. CIS works hand-in-hand with schools to help students and their families by connecting them to critical community resources, tailored to their specific needs. CIS has an unparalleled relationship with children and their families. In most cases, CIS staff is the front line in identifying health, behavioral and family crisis issues in a troubled child and then providing and/or seeking out the best services to address the needs. Many of the youth we serve are from families with issues of poverty, substance abuse, and poor mental health–a home environment that is not conducive to healthy living and a good moral compass. All CIS services and programs support the goal of providing safe and healthy environments for students both at school and at home for the good of our community. Our unique model works because it’s based on national research, driven by community relationships and supported by our local resources. More importantly we know it works because we see it in the faces and hear it in the stories of thousands of students and alumni we’ve helped in the last 26 years.
