PUEBLO ORGANIZADO EN DEFENSA DE LA TIERRA Y SUS RECURSOS

AUSTIN, Texas, 78762-6237 United States

Mission Statement

PODER (People Organized in Defense of Earth and Her Resources) is a women led, people of color grassroots social justice organization formed in 1991 to increase the participation of residents of East Austin in decisions related to the economic development and environmental protection of our communities. Our mission is to redefine environmental issues as social and economic justice issues, and collectively set our own agenda to address these concerns as basic human rights. We seek to empower our communities through education, advocacy and action.

About This Cause

PODER is a grassroots environmental social justice organization in East Austin, led by women of color, that defines the “environment” as the place we live, work, learn, play, and pray; and for that reason, we address multiple social and environmental issues affecting our communities as basic human rights. Our environment is affected by a variety of factors, including social and economic factors that affect our quality of life. The scope of our work has expanded to include: advocacy regarding the displacement of East Austin residents due to zoning, outrageous property tax increases and gentrification, the need for affordable housing, juvenile justice, improved education, zero tolerance in schools and selective enforcement targeting youth of color, local fair-trade issues and labor issues, climate justice, immigration enforcement and its effects on our communities, and preservation of green space on the East side.
