About This Cause
Ministry: St. Luke’s Lutheran Health Ministries has been a philanthropic source for health services since 1994. It is a charitable foundation whose reputation for compassion and philanthropy extends to not-for-profit organizations in Bexar and nearby counties in South Texas. Since inception, St. Luke’s has awarded more than $11 million to more than 150 organizations – providing guidance, grants and support to improve community health through organizations that deliver medical, dental and mental health care, other health services, direct care, research and education. Genesis: When St. Luke’s Lutheran Hospital at the South Texas Medical Center was founded, its mission was to provide comfort, hope and healing to the ill and suffering. In 1994, the hospital was sold to the Baptist Memorial Hospital System … yet the selfless vision of its founders remains alive through a new entity: St. Luke’s Lutheran Health Ministries, Inc. Using the proceeds of the sale, the Southwestern Texas Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America chartered a 501(c)(3) foundation whose mission would continue the hospital’s legacy of health care ministry. Vision: St. Luke’s Lutheran Health Ministries attempts to address root causes of community concerns through its grants, leveraging the financial and community resources of multiple interests in addressing issues. Its grants serve as a catalyst to stimulate joint cooperative efforts among different sectors of the community. It is the foundation’s desire to create a growing, long-lasting impact that extends beyond the value of each grant. Mission: St. Luke’s supports a spectrum of health care activities that benefit the San Antonio regional area through health care ministries that may include direct care, community health education, clinical pastoral education, health care research, ambulatory care, long-term care and home-based health care services and education. Impact: Twice a year, St. Luke’s awards grants ranging from $2,500 to $25,000 to organizations that provide a wide range of services such as skilled nursing care … prescription medications and health care to homeless and low-income individuals … mental and behavioral health services…counseling for families whose children are chronically ill … guidance for adults with disabilities … … summer camping experiences to children with profound disabilities … cord blood therapy to critically ill patients … training for medical professionals to recognize child abuse … dental and vision care to indigent patients … helping seniors maintain their dignity and independence at home … and much more. Our grants help people of all ages: individuals, families, seniors, children and infants. Governance: St. Luke’s Board of Directors is comprised of up to 30 community leaders, the majority of whom are members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The diversity of board membership broadens the reach and fulfillment of St. Luke’s purpose – to operate exclusively for charitable, scientific, educational or religious purposes that benefit the community through health care ministries. The board appreciates the responsibility that it has been given to invest the foundation’s assets prudently and to disburse its grants with wisdom and oversight. Connecting to the Community: St. Luke’s knows the community. We visit an average of 60 organizations annually through our grant cycles – conversing with the staff, touring the sites, meeting the clients who are served, and seeing how each organization’s mission fits into the community. A St. Luke’s board member accompanies the Executive Director on site visits to ensure that every grant request receives optimal attention. This hands-on practice enables St. Luke’s to view every request through a discretionary lens. Process: Grants are limited to non-profit organizations that are tax-exempt under federal law and are awarded in two cycles annually. Grant requests must be made by written application, available on the St. Luke’s website at www.sllhm.org and must meet the criteria noted on the website. Careful consideration is given to every request. Sustainability and Growth: Please consider a philanthropic partnership with St. Luke’s. Your tax-deductible contributions enhance the effect of your gifts by combining your dollars with St. Luke’s resources. The St. Luke’s board practices due diligence, makes site visits to every requesting organization and follows up to ensure appropriate utilization of grants. St. Luke’s acts as a philanthropic partner to donors.
