Mission Statement

We improve the lives of people affected by cancer, now. There can be - and should be - life after cancer. We take aim at the gaps in cancer care so living with cancer is not harder than it needs to be.

About This Cause

We fight to improve the lives of people affected by cancer now. For 20 years, the LIVESTRONG Foundation has been a voice for cancer survivors and has reached more than 8 million people. LIVESTRONG answers survivors' questions, tells their stories and helps them live their lives through direct service, advocacy and inventive partnership models. We believe in putting the survivor first. Patient-centered care means treating the whole person- emotionally, physically and practically. A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming between deciding on treatment, figuring out finances, and dealing with fear and emotional concerns. That’s why we’re here: to make sure people and families get the person-centered care they need, at the time when they need it. LIVESTRONG Navigation provides free, personalized support for the practical, physical and emotional concerns that people face when dealing with a cancer diagnosis. LIVESTRONG Navigation provides assistance with managing medical expenses and insurance challenges, fertility preservation, understanding treatment options, and accessing emotional support. Each year, 70,000 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer during their reproductive years, of which 40%-80% of women and 35%-70% of men will be at risk for infertility. Insurance providers often don't cover the cost of expensive treatment and patients can be faced with starting cancer treatment right away, which may impact their fertility. LIVESTRONG Fertility helps bridge this gap by providing free education on family building options based on diagnosis and treatment types and by offering free access to discounted fertility preservation and free stimulation medications, giving survivors the chance to build a family. For over a decade, the LIVESTRONG Leaders program has provided passionate cancer crusaders with the opportunity to serve as volunteer LIVESTRONG ambassadors in their communities. While many cancer organizations focus on the disease and researching a cure, our Leaders are our “boots on the ground” community-based outreach team, conducting grassroots events, participating in legislative advocacy, liaising with local cancer centers, and helping increase awareness and providing education about LIVESTRONG‘s person-centered programs and services available to anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis. In 2014, the Foundation launched its boldest enterprise yet - the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes at the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. The Institutes will be a pioneering approach to patient-centered cancer care designed by survivors to deliver the best teaching practices and the greatest collaborative research to serve the cancer community. The LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes has a simple yet powerful mission: to reinvent the way cancer patients and survivors are cared for and supported. The LIVESTRONG Foundation has made a $50 million commitment to create and support the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes at the Dell Medical School of The University of Texas at Austin. The LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes will rethink the full range of cancer care from prevention to diagnosis, treatment and survivorship, all with a focus on the patient’s needs, values and preferences. We partner with the YMCA of the USA to promote the importance of physical activity after a cancer diagnosis. Our ongoing dialogue with cancer survivors through our surveys and research led us to discover that a top concern among survivors was the difficulty of returning to physical activity after treatment. In response, LIVESTRONG partnered with the YMCA of the USA in 2007 to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a 12-week physical activity program designed to get survivors back on their feet. Survivors participate in free or low cost customized exercise regimens catered to their individual needs from certified fitness instructors. The instructors are trained in cancer survivorship, post-rehabilitation exercise and supportive cancer care. The curriculum includes fitness and quality of life assessments before and after participation, cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, and balance and flexibility exercises. No YMCA membership is required. LIVESTRONG at School provides age-appropriate cancer education and support to K-12th grade children impacted by cancer offering free, inspiring/empowering educational materials, engaging videos, and printable lesson plans to approximately 300,000 teachers and students a year. LIVESTRONG at School was developed in response to a growing need to offer school teachers tools and resources to talk about cancer in their classrooms. Materials are free and available in English and Spanish. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), 25% of cancer survivors in the U.S. have at least one school-aged child at home. As a result, children in classrooms around the world are dealing with the disease right now, whether with a grandparent, parent, sibling, friend or teacher, and they need support both at home and in school.
