Mission Statement
The Mothers' Milk Bank at Austin saves babies' lives by providing prescribed, pasteurized donor human milk.
About This Cause
Did you know an estimated 1 in 8 babies born in the U.S. is born premature? During the nine months of pregnancy, babies' bodies are developing to allow them to survive and thrive once they are born. However, when a baby is born too soon, their development is incomplete, and they face a greater risk of developing life-threatening diseases, or even death. Human milk is ideal nutrition for all babies, but for these babies, human milk is life-saving. However, the stress of a lengthy stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can result in a mother producing inadequate or even zero breast milk for her child; which is why the Mothers' Milk Bank at Austin (MMBA) was created--to provide life-saving donor human milk to babies in need. Donor human milk (DHM) is excess milk generously donated by healthy, compassionate women who care about the health of babies, and choose to donate their excess milk. Since 1999, MMBA has successfully dispensed 5+ million ounces (an estimated 15+ million therapeutic feedings) of DHM to babies whose mothers cannot provide their own milk. As a leader in the milk banking industry, MMBA is widely recognized for safely providing DHM to 130+ hospitals in 23 states, and for pioneering nutritional analysis and labeling of DHM, and standardization of pools to meet the specific need of preterm babies. Generous supporters, like you, permit MMBA to provide two critical programs--Charitable Care and Research. Our Charitable Care Program ensures any baby with a medical need for DHM will receive it, regardless of a family's insurance coverage or financial resources. With 10% of children in the U.S. lacking health insurance, the need for this program continues to grow year-after-year. In 2017, we granted nearly $200,000 worth of Charitable Care to 60+ babies who would otherwise have not survived. Our Research Program is responsible for putting the milk bank in a worldwide leadership position. The Program was the first in the nation to identify a method for evaluating the fat, protein, and carbohydrate content of milk from different milk donors, and creating a method for standardizing pools of milk to meet the nutritional needs of different babies. Our research efforts continue as we develop new milk products to better meet the needs of our tiniest babies--those weighing less than 2 pounds and so small, they would fit in the palm of your hand.
