Mission Statement
To improve the ethics and excellence in local television journalism.
About This Cause
For 20 years, The Kneeland Project has educated local news directors in all fifty states, providing real-world hands-on leadership training to the men and women on the front lines of local news. Kneeland changes lives and improves the quality of local news-gathering, one journalist at a time. Carole Kneeland was a rare combination of integrity, high ideals and great compassion. First as a political reporter for WFAA in Dallas and then as a news director in Austin, Carole revolutionized the way stories were told and newsrooms were led. The lessons Carole taught are timeless. Be fair, accurate, ethical and balanced. She did the right thing every day and it showed. Responsive to the evolving and ever-changing needs of journalists, The Kneeland Project weaves Carole’s critical and enduring lessons into today’s multi-platform, 24/7 local newsroom. Unlike most training that focuses on theoretical concepts for the future, Kneeland Fellows discuss real world issues affecting them now. They learn about tools and systems designed to help them perform their jobs better and more efficiently, and explore ways to help their newsrooms become more fair, ethical and balanced. And, most importantly, they leave Kneeland with concrete and realistic action plans to guide their operational decisions, day one.
