Mission Statement

Braided River believes in the persuasive power of images and stories to lead people to protect the wild and sacred lands of western North America.

About This Cause

BRAIDED RIVER Climate change and biodiversity loss present some of the most significant challenges humankind has ever faced-- and some of the greatest opportunities. To help prevent people from becoming overwhelmed in the face of these challenges, Braided River presents hopeful and inspiring stories that prove that one person can make a difference. Our work centers on protecting vast migration corridors and landscapes that allows animals freedom to roam and biodiversity to flourish. Braided River connects people of all walks of life to these wild places through visual storytelling. We publish photography books, coordinate media campaigns, host multimedia presentations, and create museum exhibits. The conservation photographers and authors we work with are among the most respected and talented artists in the field today. We bring together photographers, artists and writers with intimate knowledge of these places, communities, and traditional cultures. Together, we produce photographic-focused books, events, media campaigns, and traveling art exhibits that then become the centerpiece of carefully crafted campaigns of inspiration and influence. Through books, traditional and online earned media, events, and exhibits we have reached millions of people, and played a role in preserving millions of acres of public lands and waters in western North America. PARTNERSHIPS We partner with grassroots conservation organizations to increase the impact of every campaign. Our conservation partners include Alaska Wilderness League, Earthjustice, The Wilderness Society, Audubon Alaska, Sierra Club and many others. We also work in alliance with Indigenous communities including the Gwich'in Nation, Se'Si'Le, Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe, Quinault Indian Nation, Squaxin Island Tribe, and others. Our Values: Change is possible when expertise, resources, and power is shared. The loss of biodiversity and the climate crisis are urgent and interconnected issues that require input from all. Art communicates by building strong emotional connections. Photographers committed to mission-based immersive work are exceptional and deserving of investment; their art reveals the truth and beauty of wild places, and forms the unique core of our work. Compelling images and well-crafted stories have the power to transcend boundaries, build connection, and inspire transformational change in culture. An interdisciplinary approach to building civic environmental literacy best supports the democratic process. Environmental protection and conservation must integrate evolving principles of social and environmental justice. The Braided River community commits to actively acknowledging, engaging in, and being responsive to these indispensable conversations. Books are social and cultural touchstones that embody the enduring nature of the places we seek to protect. As new tech redefines our relationship to media, the relevance of the transformational power of books in society has stood the test of time. The lived experiences of the people of the land offer wisdom and lessons we can learn from and apply. Ethical storytelling amplifies authentic resident voices and helps empower those most directly connected with the land including Indigenous peoples and communities centered on sustainable economies. Strategic partnerships are crucial to identify, fund, and achieve tangible goals. Hope and a clear vision help to illuminate a credible and positive way forward for conservation.
