About This Cause
In 2007, the YWCA Greater Austin reached a major milestone in its history - celebrating 100 years of service to the Austin community. Incorporated in 1907 in the State of Texas as the Young Women's Christian Association of the University of Texas, the YWCA of Greater Austin has always been more than exercise and fitness programs, as many YW's are - the YWCA of Greater Austin is, and always has been, a service organization that focuses on the health and human service needs of women and girls most whom are low to moderate income. We serve over 4500 families a year. 1. Health and Safety of Women and Girls YW Counseling and Referral Center works to offer affordable culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health counseling and therapeutic support groups for women, couples, families and children. Generation YW Program works to empower middle and high school students by helping them understand gender, and improve their social, emotional, behavioral, intellectual and physical health to avoid the cycle of substance abuse. 2. Empowerment and Economic Advancement of Women Our Gateway Program is the point of entry into YWCA Greater Austin Services. It includes reception as well as Bridge short-term child-care subsidies available to families in crisis to enable the procurement of employment and long-term self-sufficiency. 3. Racial Justice and Civil Rights The YW Volunteer Training Institute has been serving the Greater Austin Community since 1907: building knowledge, skills and capacity to address the root causes of race and gender based inequities. Our program offerings include: • Monthly Dialogues on Issues of Racism & Discrimination: Held the last Friday of each month; 12:00-1:30pm these sessions are free and open to all community members. They offer a safe space for frank discussions, reflection, and contemplation of the psychological and emotional impact acts of racism have on the individual and community to help work through emotion. • YWCA Continuing Education Series | CEU YWCA Greater Austin is a CEU accredited provider for Social Work, LPC, and LMFT Continuing Education Unit hours. Through the Continuing Education Series, licensed clinicians, educators, and others working in social services have the opportunity to sharpen their counseling skills. Each Continuing Education training offered provides three (3) CEU hours, unless otherwise indicated. • YWCA Professional Development Series | PDS Through the innovative and informative Professional Development classes, YWCA Training Institute harnesses the skills and talent of locally-known speakers and professionals to educate Greater Austin women about emerging issues in the ever-changing workplace. • YWCA Personal Growth Series | PGS YWCA Personal Growth Series helps participants capitalize on their personal resources and develop new inner strengths to facilitate participants' growth and self-awareness. • YWCA Love & Sexuality Series | LSS Love.
