Mission Statement
In collaboration with our West Dallas neighbors, Wesley-Rankin Community Center identifies and bridges gaps in education, health and skills development by providing multigenerational programs that empower families to access their full potential.
About This Cause
Wesley-Rankin Community Center is a faith-based 501(c)3 with 85+ years of experience leveraging the opportunities and strengths of West Dallas to meet the complex needs of local families. Our multi-generational approach empowers families to overcome the barriers that have trapped them in poverty for generations. Each year, we serve over 700 low-income individuals, spanning three-plus generations and ranging from age 5 to 95: -Children: Educational programs for children in grades K-8 span academic support, girls’ and boys’ groups, social-emotional learning, life skills development, learning differences, and more. -Youth: Educational programs for students in grades 9-12 focus on college and career readiness, social-emotional learning, and life skills development. -Adults: Learning and leadership courses support adults as they grow as parents, wage earners, and community advocates. -Older adults: Community-building and basic needs for older adults, reduce social isolation and help them maintain overall health. OUR PROGRAMS Wesley-Rankin Community Center recognizes that because our community's challenges and opportunities are interconnected, our solutions must also be. Rather than creating a stop-gap solution to any single local need, Wesley-Rankin takes a comprehensive and sustainable approach to improve the lives of children, youth, families, and older adults through "multi-generational" interventions. This approach seeks to create positive outcomes for entire families by simultaneously addressing the unique needs of children, parents, and caregivers. Through this approach, we help our participants develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in school, work, and life. Children’s and Youth Programs -Afterschool and Summer Programs provide K-12 grade children with literacy screenings and interventions, access to individual and group counseling sessions, and enrichment activities. Students participate in one-on-one and small group tutoring to supplement what they learn in school and help them develop 21st-century skills. In addition, dinner and snacks are provided daily. -GOh GOh Girls (Girls of Hope, Girls of Honor) holistically aids in the development of girls in grades 4-12 by providing a safe place to discuss female-related issues and instilling lessons around the four cornerstones of leadership, service, responsibility, and sisterhood as well as social-emotional health. -Tri-B HUE (Boys of Honor, Boys of Unity, Boys of Equality) is a 4th-12th grade program designed to parallel the GOh GOh Girls program for young men. In addition to the eight building blocks of social-emotional health, participating boys also study chivalry and seek to become "gentlemen of the world." -The Scholars Program, in partnership with the June Shelton School, provides intensive literacy interventions for K-6 students with diagnosed and suspected learning differences like dyslexia. Using the Sequential English Education (SEE) curriculum, students learn reading and writing using tools that align with how they best learn. -Aspiring Professionals is a pre-apprenticeship program for high school students, addressing gaps in workplace readiness and low living wages using a four-part approach: technical instruction, soft skill coaching, financial support and literacy, and parent education. The Bridge to College Scholarship Program awards five scholarships to West Dallas high school students at the end of every school year. Adult and Older Adults Programs -The Adult Academy creates a community of parents/guardians through education in courses such as health and nutrition, leadership development, socio-emotional development of students, and the practice of self-care. -The Leadership Council, composed of Adult Academy graduates, ensures student/family needs are addressed in local schools and West Dallas. The Leadership Council also serves as a compass for WRCC by providing an additional voice for the community's needs. -Known as "Casa Feliz," our onsite older adult program creates social networks, improves strength and balance, maintains cognitive health, improves nutrition, and manages chronic diseases. WRCC provides a safe and nurturing environment for students to learn and grow, offers programs and services that meet the diverse needs of families, and works with partners to provide residents with other needed resources. These efforts help our participants develop their skills and knowledge to succeed.
