About This Cause

Welcome to Texas Discovery Gardens, where children and adults discover and learn to sustain the natural world. Our vision is for every visitor to leave with the knowledge and desire to emulate our sustainable practices at home. Opened in 1936 as the Hall of Horticulture for the Texas Centennial Exposition, the 7.5-acre campus includes the first public conservatory built in the Southwestern United States. Chartered in 1941 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Texas Discovery Gardens is the second oldest botanical institution in Texas, and the first in Dallas to offer botanical education programs for children. In 2003, Texas Discovery Gardens was certified as the first 100% organic public garden in the state. Each year, we reach 100,000 people through educational programming, general admission, special events, rentals and outreach. We’re proud to offer scholarships to more than 1,000 children so they can attend classes and summer camps. The Texas Discovery Gardens family includes 21 employees, 1,000 members, 300 volunteers and 13 board members. EarthKeepers® Children’s Programming Texas Discovery Gardens provides many of our under-served urban youth with their first natural outdoor learning experiences. We reach students PreK through 8th grade, scouts, science clubs, after school groups, and summer day schools. Our science-based classes allow students approximately 10,000 students each year to work directly with nature, observing and measuring their environment. The Gardens Texas Discovery Gardens encompasses 10 themed gardens, 8 plant collections, 3 water features, and a 5,000 square foot production greenhouse. The Gardens are home to nearly 1,000 botanic species, with a focus on native and adapted plants. Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium The Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium is a year-round tropical butterfly immersion exhibit. Established in 2009, the Butterfly House includes hundreds of free-flying butterflies in a natural environment designed to educate and entertain young and old alike. Visitors understand the importance of habitat conservation around the globe and how our local environment relates with tropical environments far away. Garden Resources • Our Natural Learning Center includes a Snakes of Texas Exhibit. In the lobby, visitors discover life in a garden. • Butterfly Habitat Information and Certification – Learn how to create a garden that attracts pollinators. • Adult education classes feature topics on organic gardening and the natural world. • Our twice-a-year plant sales focus on native and drought tolerant plants that attract wildlife.
