About This Cause
Sixty-two years ago, the founders of our organization recognized the need for all individuals to have access to affordable mental health services to help address their challenges of life, regardless of income. This was an innovative venture in a region and at a time when those diagnosed with a mental illness were often sent to hospitals or stayed in their homes because of the stigma associated with seeking help. When the agency was established as Family Counseling Service, we had a small staff, a modest budget and focused solely on counseling. Every decade since then presented us with new challenges and adjustments to our programs and service area. To address a wider range of the behavioral health needs of our growing consumer base, the four program priorities currently are Counseling, Kids First (a supervised visitation program), Post Adoption Services for 188 counties in Texas and Parent Education. Our governing board, staff and volunteers are all committed to advancing our mission with affordable programs and services that will help all of our client populations successfully manage their challenges of life and improve their overall well-being. Centers is an outcome-based nonprofit organization that continues to strengthen existing services, sustain the standards of good governance and management of a nonprofit and respond to the needs of anyone in need of counseling, educational and supportive services in the communities we serve.
