Mission Statement

Empowering older adults to remain healthy, active, and engaged in their communities. We envision a community where older adults are engaged, healthy, and thriving.

About This Cause

In 1967, with a vision of ending senior isolation, Sixty & Better provided classes and activities to help seniors remain healthy, active, and engaged in their communities. Numerous recognitions have been received through the years ranging from the President’s Volunteer Action Award presented by President Bill Clinton to the first diversity award presented by the United Way of Tarrant County. Sixty & Better, formerly Senior Citizens Services, was founded by the National Council of Jewish Women to address loneliness among older adults, particularly those living in poverty. The first Senior Citizens Drop-In Center was opened in Fort Worth on Hemphill with the goal of providing opportunities for older adults to find companionship and improve their physical and mental well-being. The mission of empowering older adults to live with purpose, independence, and dignity remains the same 55 years later.Over the ensuing decades, the organization opened new centers throughout Tarrant County, managing the centers, activities, and food service for up to forty centers. By 2010, additional isolation-reduction activities and evidence-based wellness classes were added, and a senior volunteer program begun. In March of 2020, Sixty & Better was forced to discontinue its management of senior centers and food service as centers were closed. In October, with no end to the pandemic in sight, the congregate meal program and center management services were transitioned to Meals on Wheels permanently. Health and wellness classes continue to be provided at the senior centers as well as being expanded to assisted living centers, libraries, and faith communities. An elder arts program, additional isolation reduction activities and intergenerational activities were added in 2022. In December 2023, Sixty & Better opened the Evelyn Siegel Creativity Lab located in the Sixty & Better offices in Ft. Worth. The creativity lab offers free weekly workshops for aging adults, featuring a variety of creative projects designed to keep hands busy and minds engaged. Each workshop is crafted to promote a sense of community, encourage peer relationships, and provide hands-on experiences using a wide range of mediums and techniques, making the workshops accessible to participants of all skill levels.
