Mission Statement

Girls Inc. of Metropolitan Dallas inspires all girl to be strong, smart and bold.

About This Cause

At Girls Inc. Dallas, we believe that every girl, no matter what her circumstances, deserves the opportunity to thrive. In a girls-only, pro-girl environment, our nationally recognized, research-based curricula and outcomes-based programming provide the activities, relationships, and experiences that girls need to succeed in school and careers, empowering them to make the best choices as they grow into young women. Our afterschool, summer, and partner-based programs offer college and career readiness, promote STEM, and build 21st-century skills. Girls Inc. Dallas has chosen to focus its efforts on girls who can most benefit from our comprehensive programming - girls growing up in low-income and under-resourced communities. Our vision is that significantly more girls from low-income families have the opportunity to succeed in life and become healthy, educated and economically independent adults. We focus on positively impacting three community issues: breaking the cycle of poverty, teen pregnancy prevention, and girls’ increased involvement in STEM education and careers. The Girls Inc. Experience defines the comprehensive approach we take to serving the whole girl. The three core components of our programs are Healthy Living, Academic Enrichment and Support, and Life Skills Instruction. • STRONG/Healthy Living: Girls participate in program activities and experiences that provide them with the knowledge, skills, and encouragement to develop and sustain a healthy lifestyle and increase their understanding about the dangers of making unhealthy choices, including illegal substance use and risky sexual activity. • SMART/Academic Enrichment and Support: Girls engage in activities and experiences that expand upon and support their school-based learning, leading to improved outlook and performance in school and educational aspirations beyond high school. • BOLD/Life Skills Instruction: Girls learn skills and strategies to lead safer and more independent lives at home, in relationships, within their communities, and online. Girls’ participation leads to increased persistence and resilience and improved self and emotional control. In addition to the core components, six essential elements collectively form the Girls Inc. Experience, providing a holistic approach to nurturing girls. The six essential elements of the Girls Inc. Experience are: • Trusting, mentoring relationships with adult staff and volunteers trained in an approach that is grounded in a belief in girls’ rights and abilities. • Holistic, compensatory, and intentional programming focused on girls’ needs that provide exposure to a wide variety of experiences and options that girls might not have otherwise experienced. • Relevant, field-tested and research-based curricula that confront the serious needs of girls while building the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enable girls to be competent, confident individuals and adult women. • Girls-centered, motivating, and interactive activities that develop and promote girls' strengths. • Sustained exposure to programming and connection with a girl over time to increase positive outcomes and reduce the potential for negative consequences. Girls who participate in the Girls Inc. Experience lead healthy and active lives. They abstain from negative lifestyle choices. They are more committed to their educational success and they dream big. Our girls display perseverance and know their future is in their hands. Our Programs Through the core component focus areas described above, the girls participate in activities tailored for each Girls Inc. Dallas age group: 6-8, 9-11, and teens. Our curriculum is designed to build upon the lessons that girls learn in school, in their life experiences, and in their time with us. Afterschool Programming: Every day after school, Monday through Friday, from August to May, we serve girls at our three neighborhood campuses. Girls Inc. provides transportation from the neighborhood schools to the Girls Inc. campuses. Activities include homework assistance and tutoring; experiences in our technology learning labs to strengthen math literacy and STEM skills; reading time to support English language literacy; arts and creative activities; physical fitness and sports; college and career exploration; and leadership and civic engagement. Summer Programming: Each summer, Girls Inc. Dallas offers two, four-week camps for each of the age groups we serve. Camps run Monday-Friday, 7:30 am-6:00 pm, at the Girls Inc. campus locations. We provide girls with a fun summer camp experience with a focus on intentional activities that encompass Strong, Smart, and Bold core program components listed above. Also, the girls participate in weekly field trips that expose them to enriching educational and social activities they otherwise would not experience. Partner-Based Programming: Girls Inc. Dallas provides girls and young women throughout the community with critical programming through its partnerships with area schools and community organizations. The scope and duration of outreach efforts include combinations of Strong, Smart and Bold program components based on the needs of the school or partner, the age of the girls participating, and the subject matter. Eureka! Model: Eureka! is a STEM-based approach that empowers 8th-12th grade girls to see themselves as an important part of the future STEM workforce. Through Eureka!, girls participate in compelling hands-on activities allowing them to explore STEM subjects in areas such as engineering, math, chemistry, and robotics. A five-year cohort-based model, Eureka!: -engages girls from diverse backgrounds who typically are underrepresented in STEM fields, -targets girls from low-income backgrounds with an interest in STEM who lack STEM-positive experiences and role models, -serves girls only, strengthening the focus on equity by providing an environment in which participants feel comfortable trying things that are not traditional for girls, and -provides career development through job shadowing and internship activities. Each cohort stays together through the five-year program enabling members to build strong supportive bonds with each other.
