Mission Statement
Communities In Schools Dallas Region (CISDR) is a local non profit with the focus of providing supportive services to children (ages 5 -18) on their school campuses. These services range from basic needs to counseling and advocacy to help keep them safe, healthy and well engaged in school. CISDR works in partnership with local school districts to help identify those campuses that are in need of extra assistance due to the population of students and families, inclusive of high risk status, poverty, and local environment. Degreed & trained CISDR staff are housed on the campus every day and become a part of that school's ecosystem with teachers depending on their CIS Staffer to help clear the way, allowing them to teach and focus on the academic needs while CIS addresses the crisis, conflicts, barriers and complications which will often take a child completely off course. CISDR does this by also inviting in the local community and parents to help address issues & clear the road for kids that need it most!
About This Cause
Why CISDR? CISDR cost effectively brings together a wide range of individual and community resources, to ensure the success of the child and family. Other organizations are there to assist with at-risk children, but generally in a niche area, not working with the whole picture. We provide and coordinate services to deliver a solution for students that the school faculty cannot assist due to time, manpower, and work constraints. In 2016-17 we enhanced our resources with the following additional intervention models: CISDR is now an official Youth Mental Health First Aide training site. Our community has witnessed a 20% increase in suicide attempts and higher completion rates in children between the ages of 10 and 19. CISDR is available to provide training to help our community identify risk indicators, connect to resources and save a young person’s life. We have reassigned our efforts to address the drug crisis impacting families across the community. Our staff, licensed in drug/alcohol prevention education, are now available full time to all CISDR campus site personnel to help identify, coach and provide resources to students with families impacted by drug abuse and addiction. CISDR helps keep these children focused to be at their best, as they cope with issues at home. Our C3 Project (Communicate, Coordinate, Collaborate) brings together over 20 vetted local partner organizations to meet the needs of our individual students. This reduces duplication of services, fosters collaborative funding, and ensures open communication among specialists in the field to address crisis quickly and intentionally. How is success measured? CISDR paid staff are housed on campus and able to work with identified students every day, tweaking interventions throughout the school year until an impactful approach is found. By reviewing student grades, attendance and behavior every six weeks, while meeting regularly with teachers and staff to discuss progress, CISDR is able to make changes to their strategy in real time. CISDR also engages parents in their child’s success to ensure wrap-around services 24/7. Saturation plus comprehensive, timely and consistent intervention is the key. CISDR programs and results During the 2016-2017 school year we supported 7,274 high needs school children, 76% of which are living in poverty. These children achieved the following results: 85% improved in academics, behavior and/or attendance 89% were promoted to the next grade 96% of eligible seniors graduated and 97% stayed in school. Funding At-A-Glance • The organization’s operating budget of $4.6 million serves at minimum, 6,667 students. A portion of the funds needed are awarded from an annual allocation from the Texas Education Agency . • The TEA grant of $1.2 million is matched by each partner school district totaling 975k, and another $1.2 million is secured through grants. CISDR’s unmet need of $1.27 million is raised thru events and fundraising efforts. • Dedication to program services is paramount, as 86% of expenses are in direct services to the students and families served. • Degreed/ trained staff are assigned to a school campus for the entirety of the school year, reporting there daily to provide hands on services as well as connect to local service providers when warranted. No child in crisis is turned away. Full time, year long dedicated CISDR services $47,700 per campus ($515-632 per child, for one school year of unlimited tutoring, counseling, parenting education via home visits, crisis assistance, etc)
