Mission Statement
Metroport Meals On Wheels is a nonprofit, grassroots, volunteer advocate for the elderly and those in need through home-delivered meals, senior center lunch programs, and other support services. MMOW is "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" alleviating hunger, isolation, and loneliness in our communities, and fostering the independence, worth, and dignity of each individual we serve. MMOW serves anyone of any age or financial circumstances who cannot consistently provide for his/her nutritional needs because of the frailties of aging, a chronic medical condition, physical limitations, or isolation. This includes providing meals for the spouse who is the primary caregiver for a participant or the children of a single parent who is unable to prepare meals for her/himself or the children. MMOW is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates independently of federal or state funding. It is not a United Way agency. It is supported solely by private and community support.
About This Cause
The image of a frail senior, alone and hungry, paints a graphic picture; a visitor bringing a hot meal and engaging the senior in animated conversation changes the picture dramatically. Providing home-delivered meals addresses essential needs of the elderly and medically frail who cannot consistently provide for their own nutritional needs. MMOW is committed to providing meals and services that are built on community support instead of state and federal programs. This commitment has enabled MMOW to build a people-centered program that is responsive to the needs of our neighbors regardless of age. As we nurture personal relationships with our participants, we affirm that they are not cases. They are not numbers. Everyone we serve is someone's mother, father, child, sibling, aunt, uncle, cousin, neighbor. They are very real people. They are also our friends. MMOW's foundation of community support walks hand-in-hand with its grassroots culture. It has inspired our Holiday Stocking Tree, Staples for Seniors, Nutritional Supplements, and We All Love Our Pets--programs that engage people in the community and bring added value to our participants. It gave rise to our partnerships with community food providers who prepare meals locally. It embraces volunteers in meaningful roles. MMOW serves individuals of any age who cannot consistently cook or shop for themselves because of the frailties of aging, chronic medical conditions, or isolation. In addition to a nourishing meal, MMOW provides peace of mind to our participants and their families that someone is looking in on a loved one when family cannot and confidence that meals will always be available regardless of financial circumstances. Neither age nor financial circumstances is a criteria or barrier for eligibility. MMOW sponsors community luncheons for active seniors that provide the opportunity for fellowship and fun. MMOW’s senior center luncheons are special events for seniors in eight communities. Depending on site, attendance ranges from 30 to 150+ seniors per luncheon. Wholesome food, lively conversation, dominoes, cards, and bingo make MMOW’s luncheons a “not-to-be-missed” special occasion regardless of whether the participants are lifelong residents or new to the community. MMOW operates senior center luncheons on a “No Reservations Necessary” basis to encourage attendance and whole-heartedly welcomes any senior who needs a meal or fellowship. Good conversation is always available. The warm hearts and helping hands of our volunteers are the glue that holds MMOW’s programs together. It is our volunteers’ gifts of time and sharing of their hearts that make it possible for MMOW to support our participants’ independence with dignity. MMOW’s volunteer is often the only human contact in a participant’s day. Anticipation of the volunteer’s visit is an incentive for many participants to get up and get dressed. MMOW brings not only the meal, but the infinite value of the volunteers’ visits to our seniors. Being there. Giving them someone to look forward to seeing. A real, live person to talk to. A smile. A hug. Another smile. Dignity. There is nothing more important that we can give our seniors. The meal nourishes them; the personal interaction sustains them. For nearly 35 years, MMOW has used the phrase “neighbors helping neighbors” to describe the way we serve our participants. Indeed, it is the heart of MMOW’s culture. And being good neighbors means most of all, recognizing, respecting and responding to the individuality of our participants and our communities. There’s no “one size fits all” approach for MMOW. We are committed to providing programs that have a solid community basis and to ensuring that each of our participants is treated like a treasured neighbor. MMOW’s ability to partner with the communities we serve, with food partners within the communities and with active community volunteers enhances the quality of life for everyone.
