Mission Statement

Fossil Rim is the first facility of its kind to have been accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. Fossil Rim Wildlife Center participates in a worldwide network of wildlife conservation organizations working to restore the delicate balance between people, animals and the environment. Fossil Rim represents more than 1,100 animals, including 50-plus species of native and non-native animals living peacefully at the 1,800-acre park.

About This Cause

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center (“Fossil Rim”) is a nonprofit species conservation and education center committed to the preservation and restoration of wildlife and natural habitats. Nearly 50 species of exotic animals, 18 of which are endangered, call Fossil Rim their home. Despite our accreditations from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) and the Zoological Association of America (ZAA), we’re distinctive among other zoos in our country in that our nearly 1,200 animals can live within their herds and free-range across large acreage spaces which is situated on nearly 1800 acres on the edge of the Texas Hill Country. We’re also unique in the fact that approximately 70% of our beautiful property is open to the public via a 7.4 mile, scenic wildlife drive, where visitors enjoy close encounters with herds of rare antelope, giraffe or zebras. The remaining 30% is where a number of endangered species like our Mexican Grey Wolf and Red Wolf, our Cheetah, and the nearly-extinct Attwater’s Prairie Chicken are bred as part of state, national, or international species recovery programs, and it is open to the public by guided tour. Since Conservation education is half of Fossil Rim’s mission, we also place great importance on offering a wide variety of educational programs and experiences. At our Wolf Ridge Nature Camp, we operate day and overnight educational camps for school groups and civic organizations, such as boy and girl scouts, homeschools, church groups, etc. In fact, about 9,000 children attend one or more of our programs annually.
