About This Cause
Stage West is a live professional theatre founded in 1979 in Fort Worth, TX by Jerry Russell. Over the decades, the theatre has become known for excellence in acting, design, and direction. The year-round seasons are made up of mostly contemporary, though some classic, plays and the occasional musical. The line-up is always a balance of escapism entertainment mixed with thought-provoking material with current relevance. Production teams are mostly comprised of local professionals represented by national stage unions. In addition, the theatre has a modest yet highly active educational wing conducting year-round classes for adults and youths, summer camps for kids, and a popular summer conservatory for teens. Each year includes a K-12 playwriting contest called The Neighborhood Playwriting Competition from which 20-30 titles are selected for production in the spring. Those spring productions make up the Festival of the Kid and feature area youths as the actors and local professionals as the directors. Stage West also runs The Lobby Cafe before all productions. This full-service cafe features an eclectic menu inspired by the theatre's origins as Jerry Russell's sandwich shop by day and theatre by night. Along with many delicious sandwich offerings are plates created by Chef Arturo Limon. The restaurant is a much-loved feature of the theatre and also features ingredients from local farms and specialty items from local shops such as pastries and coffee. As of 2020, the theatre is led by a volunteer board of directors who oversee Executive Producer Dana Schultes and her team of fourteen additional staff members. The financials are overseen by Managing Director Mark Shum. Stage West has a loyal following of patrons and donors, many of whom helped to fund a recent $2.5M campaign to renovate the theatre's facilities, which the organization bought in 2018. Between annual awards for productions, local and state proclamations of excellence, and individual citations for various accomplishments, Stage West proudly carries a long list of critical praise and achievements. However, the team always strives to make all current projects better than the last as the culture does't include the idea of resting on laurels. Instead the company motto is "Whatever It Takes" to bring great live theatre and opportunities to create great live theatre to the North Texas area.
