Mission Statement

Attitudes & Attire® is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting personal growth for women seeking self-sufficiency. Our program provides tools that raise self-esteem, promote ethics and build the confidence necessary to develop successful life skills. Since 1996, more than 21,000 women have transformed their attitudes and restored their confidence through our three programs – Job Readiness Workshops (Core Program), Hopeful Smiles™ and Boots to Heels.

About This Cause

Job Readiness Workshops (Core Program) For over 21 years, Attitudes & Attire® has assisted low-income women in developing the confidence they need to alter their life situations and secure self-sufficiency. Our Job Readiness Workshops (Core Program) teach women to recognize their own self-worth. • Workshops -- Attitudes & Attire® offers a series of three workshops to uplift and empower women in our community. At the first workshop, participants are given a variety of tools to build self-esteem and learn workplace skills. Some of the topics discussed in the job readiness workshops include: self-esteem building, communication skills, goal-setting and healthy relationships. The second workshop consists of additional life skills information presented by human resource or finance professionals in our community. The third workshop is a celebration where clients share news of their success as well as give us feedback on the program. At our most recent third workshop, many clients stated they most enjoyed the positive self-talk exercises and boundary setting. • Boutique – We provide business-appropriate clothing in our clothing boutique which is stocked primarily with donations from the community. Upon completion of the first workshop, volunteers assist clients with interview-appropriate clothing including a suit, blouse, jewelry and a scarf. Upon completion of the second workshop, clients are invited to select a handbag and shoes. At the third workshop, our clients are invited to select upwards of five pieces of our more casual clothing. • Workbooks – We provide a workbook designed to guide clients toward healthy self-esteem, self-sufficiency and stability in their personal and professional lives. The workbook was developed after realizing our clients absorb a large volume of information in a very short amount of time. The workbook provides something tangible our clients can reference long after completing our program. We often hear stories of women sharing the workbook with their children. Hopeful Smiles™ Founded in 2006, Hopeful Smiles™ provides restorative dental care to women whose smiles have been damaged by poverty, addiction, violence, illness or neglect. Hopeful Smiles™ is a partnership with Dallas-area dentists who volunteer chair time to our clients. The program provides assistance to women who are below the poverty line and have a severely damaged smile. Lack of dental care can have an adverse effect on our clients’ employment opportunities and self-esteem – both impediments for becoming economically self-sufficient. Attitudes & Attire® is able to offer Hopeful Smiles™ at a minimal, non-refundable fee of $25 to ensure the clients’ commitment to the program. This is the only fee incurred during treatment. The clients must complete all three job readiness workshops as well as volunteer a minimum of 20 hours at Attitudes & Attire® prior to being assigned a dental provider. Once assigned a dental provider, clients are in the program anywhere from four months to over twelve months. Some women are in the program longer due to the complexity of their case. Because many of our clients do not have transportation, every effort is made to assign the client to a dental provider in their neighborhood or on the bus line. As part of the requirements of Hopeful Smiles™, the clients have to attend a presentation given by a dental school and/or dental professional within 120 days of beginning their treatment. The purpose of the presentation is to educate the clients on the importance of good oral hygiene, healthy eating and more. Many of our clients are not aware of the adverse effects bad oral care has on health. Over two-thirds of clients who have completed their Hopeful Smiles™ treatment report they now eat healthier foods which increases their energy. After a woman completes treatment, we witness an improved outlook on life, including heightened self-esteem and hope for the future. This new optimism improves her motivation to achieve her goals and take initiative. A new smile is the icing on the cake for our Hopeful Smiles™ clients to make changes to reach their full potential – benefitting their families, their children and their community. Boots to Heels Boots to Heels, founded in 2012, is for women in the military community giving them a safe environment to connect with other females who have been through similar experiences. We provide a three-part program assisting in their journey toward self-sufficiency and stability in civilian life. With our core program as a base, Boots to Heels addresess the unique needs of women veterans. They have an opportunity to interact with others who face similar challenges transitioning from military to civilian life while reclaiming their self-esteem and finding their self-worth. Always held on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Boots to Heels consists of the following three days: • Day One is an introduction to Attitudes & Attire® and an extension of our core program. We assist the women with identifying barriers to their self-esteem and equipping them with tools to feel more confident. We provide a safe environment where the women connect and network with each other. At the end of the day, clients choose work-appropriate attire from our clothing boutique. • Day Two focuses on employment. Women veterans and human resource professionals work one-on-one with our clients to assist with resume development and interview skills. Partner agencies such as Allies in Service, American G.I. Forum and Texas Veterans Commission introduce services for continuation in the job search. We also invite a woman veteran to share how she overcame struggles. • Day Three introduces community resources available to our Boots to Heels clients including Equest, a financial fitness expert and a Veterans Administration approved attorney who provides tips on how to file a claim appropriately. After completing the three day seminar, Boots to Heels participants are invited to participate in the Center for BrainHealth’s SMART program held two consecutive Fridays at Attitudes & Attire®. SMART (Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Training) improves brain functions we use every day such as decision-making, attention-span, planning, reasoning and judgment.
