About This Cause
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION Since 2002, Cancer Support Community North Texas (CSCNT) has been the industry leader in North Texas for providing emotional, social and psychological support to cancer patients and their families – a service acknowledged by the Institute of Medicine as a critical component of a comprehensive cancer treatment plan. CSCNT serves the entire DFW area with three Clubhouse locations – Plano, Dallas and Ft. Worth. We support patients through all stages of their journey with cancer regardless of diagnosis, stage of treatment, age, gender or ability to pay. Recognizing the radical impact of having a loved one with cancer, CSCNT also offers support to family, caregivers and friends. Founded in New York City in 1995 in memory of the late actor/comedian, Gilda Radner, Gilda's Club became a forerunner of the growing cancer support movement. Gilda's Club North Texas, the only Texas affiliate, was founded in 2002. In July 2009, Gilda's Club Worldwide joined forces with The Wellness Community to become Cancer Support Community. Our mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. Our vision is that no one faces cancer alone. CSCNT is an affiliate of Cancer Support Community (CSC), an international nonprofit dedicated to providing support, education and hope to people affected by cancer. The organization is supported by an evidence-based program that is the industry leader in psychosocial and emotional support for people impacted by cancer. Vast resources exist within the network that provide for the full-spectrum of needs that occur with a cancer diagnosis. Resources include education, screening tools, a research institute, virtual support groups, a 24/7 hotline, and much more. All support services are facilitated by licensed mental health professionals who have thousands of hours of training prior to employment with the organization. Cancer Support Community has been identified by The Institute of Medicine as a provider that meets their research-based best practices for patient care. We support participants by addressing their needs in: • crisis intervention, distress screening, resources and referral • understanding a cancer diagnosis, treatments and available support services • coping with the overwhelming emotions surrounding illness and treatment • managing illness and health • making behavioral changes to minimize disease impact • managing disruptions in work, school, and family life • addressing challenges of long-term survivors • coping with cancer- related grief through a bereavement program for kids and adults A preeminent provider, CSCNT offers evidence-based programs developed by the Cancer Support Community Research and Training Institute not available elsewhere including: Open to Options™ one-on-one treatment counseling and CancerSupportSource™ a state-of-the-art, nationally recognized distress screening program. CSCNT is the only North Texas organization with multiple locations completely dedicated to providing support for people impacted by cancer, including both the patient and loved ones. Further, the CSCNT program is available 24/7 via the CancerSupportCommunity.org website. With a toll-free number and virtual living room, support is just a call or click away.
