Mission Statement
Our mission is to improve protection for civilians caught in conflicts around the world. We call on and advise international organizations, governments, militaries, and armed non-state actors to adopt and implement policies to prevent civilian harm. When civilians are harmed we advocate the provision of amends and post-harm assistance. We bring the voices of civilians themselves to those making decisions affecting their lives.
About This Cause
Center for Civilians in Conflict works for the men, women, and children caught in the midst of war. We believe civilians should be spared war’s devastation and no civilian loss should be forgotten or overlooked. At Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC), we work directly with people who have the power to transform the planning, conduct, and aftermath of conflicts for civilians—from military officials and policymakers to UN bodies and civilians themselves. Countries We work with civilians in conflict zones. We travel to conflict zones and speak directly to those affected. We document their stories and listen when they tell us what they want. We bring their perspective to those in power and advise on ways to recognize, protect, and help them. Research & Documentation We are advocates and advisers creating policies and practices to make warring parties more responsible to civilians before, during, and after combat operations. We research issues important to civilians caught in armed conflict and use our findings to advocate with those in positions of power. Military Engagement We engage with militaries. We press warring parties to better protect civilians, to track and investigate civilian harm and to create programs that recognize and help victims and survivors of their combat operations. Amends & Post Harm Assistance We work with people who have the power to change conflict’s lasting impact. We press warring parties to recognize and help the civilians they harm during lawful combat operations. We call this new concept and behavior in conflict making amends, and work in capitals with governments, NGOs, and the UN to push both the policy and practice.
