Mission Statement
The mission of St. Jude Chapel is to maintain a Catholic presence in downtown Dallas to serve the business community, the residents, and visitors with daily Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
About This Cause
St. Jude Chapel, located at 1521 Main St. and opened in April 1968, was founded by Arthur Hughes and a group of leading Dallasites who envisioned a chapel in the heart of downtown. The chapel with a seating capacity of 350, held its first Mass on April 28, 1968, and was formerly dedicated by Bishop Thomas K. Gorman on September 15, 1968. The original building was built between 1892 and 1899 and was used as a vaudeville theater, a Nickelodeon, part of Woolworth’s expansion, a jewelry store before being purchased by the Diocese of Dallas for the express purpose of establishing this Catholic house of worship for the city’s center community. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered daily Monday through Saturday along with daily Mass, a Vigil Mass and two Masses on Sunday. A gift shop was added after the 1980’s and sells candles, rosaries, bibles and other religious items.
