Mission Statement

The Chinese Community Center is a United Way agency that seeks to bridge East and West by enriching families with educational, cultural, and social service programs.

About This Cause

Since 1979, the Chinese Community Center (CCC) has played a leading role in welcoming newcomers to America and in creating opportunities for people of all backgrounds to contribute to the Houston community. The mission of CCC is to bridge East and West by enriching families with educational, cultural, and social service programs. Serving more than 10,000 people from diverse backgrounds a year, CCC’s integrated programs help meet the needs of Greater Houston residents from any racial or ethnic group and at any stage of life—from early childhood to aging in place—and CCC specializes in providing culturally competent, in-language care to Asian Americans. To accomplish its mission, CCC focuses its services on the following areas: • helping immigrants integrate effectively and productively into American society; • supporting the learning and positive development of at-risk children and youth so they can graduate from high school and achieve success in their postsecondary plan; • helping people who are ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed)—in other words, working but still struggling to afford basic necessities, such as housing, food, childcare, healthcare, and transportation—achieve financial stability; • helping older adults age in place by maintaining their health, well-being, and connection to the community; • improving access to health services and community resources for immigrants, people with limited English proficiency, and other vulnerable populations; • increasing the participation of the Asian American community in civic engagement through education and capacity building; and • promoting greater cultural understanding of the Asian American community. CCC’s core services include the following: • the Early Learning Center, a nationally accredited, early childhood education program that helps children aged 18 months to five years achieve age-appropriate developmental milestones so they can reach their full potential and transition successfully to kindergarten; • the Youth program, which helps at-risk students in kindergarten through twelfth grade optimize their academic and social-emotional development during the after-school hours and summertime so they can grow into productive and responsible adults and succeed in their postsecondary education and career path; • the Social Services program, which equips adults with the skills and knowledge needed to grow their careers and achieve long-term financial resilience through such services as vocational training, financial education, adult education, homebuyer education, and citizenship assistance; • the Senior Center, which helps older adults maintain healthy, independent living through the Day Activity and Health Services (DAHS) program and maintain physical and social-emotional well-being through health education, wellness programs, and evidence-based interventions; and • the Culture & Community program, which celebrates and promotes cultural understanding through such activities as the Chinese Language School (which was CCC’s original founding program) and the annual Lunar New Year Festival. Through service referrals across programs, CCC creates an integrated client journey—a “one-stop shop”—to address the needs of all members of a household. For example, a family that contacts CCC for early childhood education can also enroll their school-age children in out-of-school-time, structured activities to enhance the children’s college and career readiness; access integrated career and financial services to help parents obtain employment and build savings and credit; and participate in evidence-based training on how to help a grandparent manage a chronic disease, such as diabetes.
