Mission Statement
Challenger Center engages students and teachers in dynamic, hands-on exploration and discovery opportunities that strengthen knowledge in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), inspire students to pursue careers in these fields, and provide an outlet to learn and apply important life skills.
About This Cause
Challenger Center is a leading nonprofit STEM education organization that develops and delivers experiential STEM education programs that bring STEM subjects to life and inspire students to pursue STEM careers. OUR IMPACT Nearly 6 million students have experienced a Challenger Center program since our founding in 1986. Our core programs are specifically designed to increase student STEM engagement, self-efficacy, career awareness, and 21st century skills such as critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. Reaching hundreds of thousands of learners each year, we now have alumni working in STEM fields around the globe and identifying their Challenger Center experience as the moment they changed their attitude about STEM subjects from “Can I?” into “I can!” OUR LEGACY Founded in 1986, Challenger Center was established by the families of the Challenger STS 51-L crew. In the aftermath of the shuttle tragedy, the families worked together to ensure the legacy of the Teacher in Space crew would continue. They formed Challenger Center to carry on the important educational mission. Today, Challenger family members remain committed to the mission and serve on the Board of Directors and Advisory Council. STEM PROGRAMS Challenger Center develops simulation-based STEM programs delivered to students in the classroom or at Challenger Learning Centers. Core programs are aligned to national education standards and designed in collaboration with NASA, the National Science Foundation, and private sector partners.
