Founded in 1990, The Women’s Resource provides free financial education and research so that women and girls have the knowledge they need to make sound financial decisions and improve their lives. The organization engages 150+ volunteers and is led by a board of trustees and three full-time staff.
About This Cause
MISSION: Founded in 1990, The Women’s Resource provides free financial education and research so that women and girls have the knowledge they need to make sound financial decisions and improve their lives. The organization engages 150+ volunteers and is led by a board of trustees and three full-time staff. PROGRAMS: Personal Finance Classes 95% of class participants are low income. Focus is teaching women and girls but classes also offered for men. Class topics include: Banking, Budgeting, Credit Management, Insurance and Risk Management, and Investing 101 using the acclaimed FDIC Money Smart™ and US Department of Labor Wi$e Up™ curricula. The Women's Resource recruits volunteer instructors to teach classes at social service agencies, colleges, and businesses in 39 zip codes. 30,000 Houstonians have completed a class since 1990. Project LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) Life skills and financial education course offered to at risk 9th and 10th grade girls during the fall and spring of each school year. Started in 2005 at Jeff Davis High School as pilot for pregnant and parenting girls. Class topics include: Values and Decision Making, Goal Setting, Creating a Personal Financial Plan and Budget, and Choosing My Career Path. In 2013 – 2014, offered at KIPP Voyage Academy and Booker T. Washington, Challenge Early College, César Chávez, Davis, Harmony Science Academy, Lamar, Milby, Sanchez, Wheatley, Worthing, and YES Prep Gulfton High Schools. Research To date, 13 studies have been published on a broad range of issues critical to women, girls, and families.
