Mission Statement
Living Water International exists to demonstrate the love of God by helping communities acquire desperately needed clean water, and to experience "living water"—the gospel of Jesus Christ—which alone satisfies the deepest thirst.
About This Cause
Living Water International was birthed from a medical mission trip to Kenya in 1990. The medical team members quickly realized that so many of the issues they were treating could be solved by one thing: safe water. Upon returning home, they quickly mobilized resources and founded the organization in 1991. Since then, the organization has accumulated extensive experience in designing community-specific water and sanitation solutions by relying on expert staff and partners in the US and on the ground. The organization employs simple technologies such as hand pumps, to larger, more complex piped water systems utilizing groundwater development (boreholes), gravity flow systems, solar power, surface water abstraction, rainwater harvesting, and a variety of other technologies. We accomplish our mission through provision of water access, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs in local communities using community-led plans. In each community, Living Water seeks to improve physical health, increase access to sustainable safe water, change behavior around sanitation and hygiene practices, and ensure community ownership of WASH services. By operating regional and country teams comprised of local staff with extensive experience in the communities in which we work, we are able to achieve greater success and impact. We work with and through local faith and community leaders who are established in the community and have deep local knowledge and trust. Along with the work to bring physical relief to communities, Living Water partners with local churches and respected community leaders to share the gospel and mobilize the community for lasting transformation. Working through existing structures and trusted leaders ensures greater sustainability of projects. The organization is currently working in 17 countries in the Americas, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. To date, Living Water has completed more than 23,000 safe water projects.
