Mission Statement
Pride Houston is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating, promoting, and enriching the LGBTQ+ community in Houston, Texas. For over four decades, Pride Houston has produced vibrant annual, accessible celebrations without barriers—including all official Houston Pride Month events and the annual Houston Pride Festival and Parade, along with year-round events fostering unity and representation in our diverse LGBTQ+ community, welcoming allies, people of color, and all identities, to create an environment of continuous, year-round celebration, encompassing history, advocacy, visibility, and equity.
About This Cause
Pride Houston's core mission is to strengthen equality and increase awareness around issues important to our community such as health, safety and marriage equality. Pride Houston celebrates the individuality and diversity of every person as we all strive for acceptance from parents, friends and society-at-large. From annual charity events to aiding LGBT-support and -counseling networks, its activities continue to promote social awareness and enrich the diversity that helps the Houston community thrive. At Pride Houston, we're deeply committed to uplifting our community through initiatives like our RISE program. RISE stands for Rally, Inspire, Support, and Elevate, and it embodies our dedication to grassroots organizations dedicated to serving the needs of the LGBTQ+ community. Through RISE, we provide essential support, resources, and funding to these organizations, empowering them to make a meaningful impact. In addition to supporting grassroots efforts, we recognize the importance of providing opportunities for at-risk LGBT+ teens. That's why we offer need-based scholarships to help ensure that every young person, regardless of their circumstances, has access to education, support, and a chance to thrive. These scholarships are a vital part of our commitment to fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for all members of our community. Nearly a decade after the Stonewall Riots in New York, the Gay Rights Movement for equality made its way to Houston. Houston’s own “Stonewall Movement” occurred in June of 1977 when thousands gathered around City Hall in downtown Houston to protest against Anita Bryant. The current Pride Celebration is typically held the last Saturday in June to commemorate Stonewall, and the parade, which is held in the evening after sunset. This tradition began in 1997, arranged by then-Houston City Council member Annise Parker, where a parade ordinance was revised to allow for the nation’s only nighttime Pride Parade.
