HOUSTON SWING DANCE SOCIETY

HOUSTON, Texas, 77003 United States

Mission Statement

The Houston Swing Dance Society’s aspirational mission is to introduce people of all ages, colors, races, cultures, genders, and orientations to the joy of the music and social dances of the Swing Era and to create a “living tradition” in our diverse communities in support of the resurgence of the Lindy Hop: the great African-American social dance that emerged from Harlem ballrooms in the late 1920s. However, Swing Dancing has always been broader than Lindy Hop, and HSDS’s mission includes introducing and educating people to other dances like the Charleston, the Shim Sham, the Big Apple, and couple dances like Blues, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, Carolina Shag, DFW Swingout, Houston Two-Step, and Chicago Stepping. HSDS will continue to develop a diverse and vibrant local Lindy Hop and Swing dance community that includes communities of color, younger dancers, and dancers of limited means with quality programming and affordable pricing.
