Mission Statement
A Shelter for Cancer Families provides stability, shelter and support for families seeking cancer care in the Texas Medical Center.
About This Cause
We provide tangible support to FAMILIES (not just patients) affected by cancer. Regardless of age, cancer-type, treatment or economic status, we are here for you and your family. The housing support ASCF offers is based on what out-of-town families affected by cancer need. Each ASCF apartment includes its own full service kitchen offering the families we serve privacy and options during a sensitive time. Each unit also includes its own washer and dryer providing convenience and dignity for families during their stay in Houston. Finally, every apartment has its own private gathering place for families to call their own “home away from home” where they can make memories with loved ones and receive guests. Or in the case when immune systems are compromised, having one's own space can provide an extra level of protection from germs and peace of mind for patients. ASCF provides cancer navigation services to families from Houston and out-of-town who are seeking cancer care in the Texas Medical Center. ASCF Cancer Navigators are volunteers trained to help guide families through the cancer journey. Our Cancer Navigators can help families successfully traverse the cancer landscape by providing assistance with note taking and facilitating communication between families and the healthcare team. They can accompany families to clinic visits and share information about cancer resources that may be available. ASCF Cancer Navigators can help families make sure that they have the information they need in a format and language they can understand in order to be able to make educated choices regarding cancer care. ASCF also has Celebrations for Cancer Families. Cancer doesn't take a holiday but that doesn't mean that cancer families cannot celebrate what is important to them. A Shelter for Cancer Families (ASCF) is committed to creating opportunities for families to celebrate in the midst of the cancer journey. While patients and their loved ones focus treatment, ASCF and our team of volunteers can take care of the little details that one day will be cherished family moments. We don't want the families we serve to miss an opportunity to recognize an important milestone or celebrate a family tradition.
